A Dakota County city of nearly 80,000 residents is set to welcome its second mosque in less than a year.
The Al Hadi Association, an independent nonprofit Islamic organization, was given the green light Monday night by the Lakeville City Council to build a permanent place of worship, known as Al-Hadi Masjid.
The city council approved a conditional use permit to allow a religious institution to be built at 17732 Junelle Path in Lakeville, which is zoned as a single family residential district. non-controversial and passed with a single block vote.
“Our community is delighted,” Muhammad Shabaz, secretary of the Al-Hadi Masjid board, told the Pioneer Press on Tuesday.
The nearly 3,700-square-foot facility, which has been years in the making, will serve the Muslim community through daily prayers, Islamic education, seasonal events and a variety of programs.
Parking for religious institutions is calculated based on the design capacity of the main assembly, according to the city. In this case, with a capacity for 118 people, a minimum of 39 parking spaces is required. The site proposes 59 parking spaces.
“When people ask me where I’m from, I don’t say ‘India,’ I say ‘Lakeville,’” said a youngster at the Monday night meeting. “When some people hear the word ‘mosque’ they think it’s only a place where Muslims pray.
Several people of differing faiths spoke in favor of the mosque, including Jewish individuals, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a Lutheran pastor.
“I am here to voice our support for a diverse worshipping community,” said Nathan Lyke, an associate pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lakeville.
“The same luxury that’s been afforded to us for over 100 years, I hope can still remain for all types of worshipping folks in Lakeville,” Lyke said.

Aww it’s so nice to see the fine folks welcoming the people who want them dead. They’ll find out after it’s too late.
I’m sure the community was just “delighted” with that one too. I swear, politicians of all stripes need to be hunted down and hung from the nearest lamppost for supporting this crap. The American people aren’t being represented by anyone anymore.
Probably due to Muslim factions that hate each other. That’s what happened in our case.
