Railroad work crews cut fiber optic cable, grounding flights across NYC

Air traffic into New York City’s major airports suffered heavy delays Monday after crews working on the Northeast Corridor rail line severed a fiber optic cable linking two major air traffic control centers.

Around 9:45 a.m. on Monday, contractors working for NJ Transit accidentally severed a fiber optic line while working on a rail car storage project at a yard near the Northeast Corridor line in New Brunswick, according to a statement issued by the Garden State railroad.

The severed cable appeared to have knocked out all communications between New York’s metro area air traffic control and its counterpart in Philadelphia, which controls much of northern New Jersey’s air space.

“We’ve been made aware that this cable served as a back-up to a primary circuit system that failed,” an NJ Transit spokesman said in a statement.

Initial reports said the work crew was from Amtrak, which owns and maintains much of the Northeast Corridor.

This shows how tenuous our civilization is.

Cut a few fiber optic cables, knock down a high tension electrical tower or two and the entire system collapses............

That’s why is pay to not get wrapped up in all the internet and cell phones crap. Flick of a switch (cut of cable) and you are screwed if you are 100% digital.

One way to increase ticket sales on the trains in the Northeast Corridor and throttle competition from the former Eastern (now American) and Pan Am (now Delta) shuttles.

The Trump Shuttle was a financial failure, so maybe Trump is just getting even?

Anyone ask why the primary circuit was down, and for how long?

Not the first time. There’s a train tunnel in Baltimore that was a notorious single point of failure for fiber. Don’t know if they ever mitigated that vulnerability.

In a prior life, I used to work for a railroad law department. You’d be amazed how the mistakes of one person can have extremely wide and sometimes tragic impacts on a city or region. One person doesn’t handle a safety protocol correctly and a hundred people die. One person cuts a cable and power goes out to thousands. One person doesn’t know how to operate a barge and rams a bridge and a hundred people die. The worst - the absolute worst - was the people who drive around the railroad crossing gates that come down when a train is coming because they think they can beat the train and don’t want to wait. The most heartbreaking thing I ever saw were the reports of little children being killed because people drove cars with little children in them around the gate and tried to beat a train going 60 or 70 mph.

All tragic examples of human stupidity. All preventable and unnecessary. But humans are flawed beings and most are idiots. It’s easy to be stupid and humans will always do “easy” when they can. Sad stories, indeed.

Nobody called Dig Safe?

All of the restaurants were shut down during Labor Day weekend in two tourist trap towns in northern New Hampshire.

A contractor digging with an excavator ripped out several feet of two 100 pair cables.

One was color coded, the other and old paper wrapped one with no color codes.

You have to tone out every wire pair to find the matching one.
