Do Americans care about America’s fast-growing national debt, now above $40 trillion? You bet they do. In the latest I&I/TIPP Poll, an overwhelming majority of the voting-age population say they’re concerned about the mounting liabilities on the nation’s balance sheet, and blame out-of-control spending for the red ink.
In the latest national online I&I/TIPP Poll, taken by 1,481 adults from Aug. 25 through Aug. 28, participants were asked: “The nation’s debt is close to $40 trillion. How concerned are you about the size of the U.S. national debt?” The poll has a margin of error of +/-2.9 percentage points.
As noted, the response was overwhelmingly one-sided: 77% said they were either “very concerned” (48%) or “somewhat concerned” (29%), while just 15% described themselves as either “not very concerned” (10%) or “not at all concerned” (5%). Another 8% were not sure.
And as the chart shows, this is not a partisan issue. Differences among the political parties are small. The lowest level of concern, 72%, is found among independent voters. Democrats (83%) and Republicans (77%) evince the most concern, while Republicans (18%) and independents (17%) have the most “not concerned” responses, Democrats the least (10%). But all are fairly close.
When it comes to respondents’ own political beliefs, this is one area where self-described liberals (81% “concerned”) and conservatives (80% “concerned”) are in near-perfect harmony. But moderates lag not far behind at 74%.
A second question about the debt asks: “In your opinion, what is the leading cause of the rising U.S. national debt?”

I am skeptical that libtards really care about spending, other than when a Republican is in the White House. But it's reasonable to believe a majority of American see it as a problem though.
The second question on the poll about the cause of the debt is where it appears people don't understand the impact of social programs.
A balanced budget amendment along with term limits would go a long way to getting the federal government under control.
There are several charts at the link showing the polling results.
I accept we are screwed and there is no fix outside of a total collapse and reset, who knows when. Buy ammo and stock up water and such.
If term limits worked, California would have a responsible legislature.

Even if they somehow passed a Balanced Budget Amendment, they would attach a loophole to be able to ignore it................
This concern over government debt is ironic given that most categories of personal debt are now at record highs. The glaring inconsistency is hard to overlook.
I favor a balanced fiscal year amendment.
If the federal government overspends, federal elected officials would have their government-funded employment limited to their current terms.
The federal government could overspend to fight a depression or a war, but at an unpalatable price.
Warren Buffett would have the overspend limited to 3% of GDP as I recollect. I would have it limited to a fixed dollar amount.

Not one of them will support actual cuts. The sec the mere threat of cutting any program is put forth, the usual suspects come out of the woodwork and proclaim cruelty, neglect, heartlessness and grandma being pushed over the cliff in the wheel chair.
We are in a trap. We need to stop out of control spending!! But the politicians are not willing to cut their kick backs and/or use the prospect of cuts to scare voters and gain power.

I say again, Americans care about spending until the cuts hit them personally.

Everyone likes to think balanced budget bills always cut spending. They usually just guarantee tax increases.
The only solution is limited government. If no one can commit to that then the debt eventually collapses on itself.
Well then we need to get off our fat lazy asses and stop the tax increases instead of throwing up our hands and moaning “woe is me”. You’re not going to get limited government until we find more and more ways to strangle the beast and a balanced budget amendment is one tool in our favor. We have to start some place.
Trump added what to the deficit? $8T? Do you think anyone in DC is going to stop out of self-control?
Did anyone forget clintoon, odoofus & creep gropin’ pedo slowjoe’s admins when the only entity hiring was the govt. Businesses were at a standstill, bankrupt or plain going out of business? GovtsSpending was horrendous.
