LOS ANGELES - Tired of high DMV fees and long lines? That could soon come to an end under a plan proposed by Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton.
Standing outside the West Hollywood DMV office Tuesday, Hilton announced his plan to abolish the DMV as a stand-alone state agency and cut annual vehicle registration fees to a flat $73.

He said the biggest issue for Californians is the cost of living and his plan to cut registration fees is just one step of making life more affordable.
"As the governor of California, I can affect how much money we take out of Californians' pockets. And so that is the simplest, quickest way to help people with the cost of living, is for the government to take less money out of their pockets. And so that's why top of my list for changes in California is what I call a working-class tax cut. Your first $150-grand tax free. And over the course of the next few weeks we'll be laying out the plans that we have, Operation Zero Waste, to cut the bloat and the waste in our government so that we can put that money back in your pocket," he explained during the protest.

Old news. In Ontario Canada when the price of gas shot up during covid the annual registration fee was eliminated. No more annual stickers. You still had to register your vehicle each year but no fee anymore and you could do it online or in person if you were so inclined.
There will be no need for a DMV when Waymo makes car ownership unnecessary. No highway patrol. No need for insurance. No need for parking lots.
Gonna be awesome.

Yesterday I paid $6/gal for Diesel. That hurt. I can’t wait until it’s back around $3. Things are going to be very expensive for a while until that price comes down.
Transportation, agriculture, livestock, groceries. It all runs on Diesel. Things are going to be much more expensive for a few months.
Excellent! When you have to live in a 15 minute city, you won’t need a car. When they force you into a 7.5 minute city (for your own good) no one will need cars.

The gentleman in front of me approached the window and was roundly scolded for asking whatever question he asked. Paraphrasing the nasty, loud, condescending DMV woman..."Didn't you hear what I just told the man in front of you?"
My experience wasn't much happier.
In subsequent years, the DMV offices grew even more crowded, and Spanish appeared to be the dominant, or at least near-dominant language.
I miss the California of many, many decades ago. Hilton can help recover the state.

Drive in I80 towards Reno and it feels like your driving on a washboard. As soon as you get into Nevada it feels like your driving on a pool table.
No lines in Texas. On the rare occasion you might actually have to go to the DMV you go online and make an appointment. When you arrive you are met by a greeter who uses you to the appropriate window where a smiling, polite DMV employee happily takes care of you. Oh, and registration for every vehicle is $78.25, payable online.
I wrote to the Steve Hilton campaign that he is dealing with demons: Jim Jones was possessed and supported Jerry Brown. Hilton will need a priest on staff and a Bible quote in his daily emails. Steve Hilton helped pass the Brexit vote in England and then left after the vote. Chad Bianco might be better. The DMV is just a jobs program for D students. Arnold promised to lower registration fees which is about the only thin he got accomplished. Gray Davis told Newsom to stop being addicted to money. Padre Serra, pray for us.
Canada has also suspended the federal gasoline tax of .10 per liter ( 38 cents a gallon)

It’s been 25 years since I lived in CA but I found a trick for dealing with the DMV. You didn’t have to have an appointment, you could just walk in. Now normally that’s a bad idea but if you arrive 5 minutes before closing they would let you in and lock the door behind you. Now they had to serve everyone before they could go home. Things moved really fast.

You may be right but and car rentals will will be downsized at airports just like horses were downtown.

Had a temporary assignment in California in 1964 and it was paradise.
A night or Sunday in the City, as San Francisco was then called, was always a joyful experience. Neighborhoods all looked like where the Cleavers and Nelson’s lived. And the California girls - you could write a song about them.
Would have moved there but the military called.
By the time I had settled back east California was already starting to change - for the worse, Berkeley, drugs, Jerry Brown.
It has gone further down exponentially since then. Spanish has become the native language, homeless are everywhere, as are feces and urine and needless to say. Illegal aliens are the fastest growing and soon to be majority demographic, there is only one political party, hopelessly corrupt and dictatorial, uncontrolled, even fostered, crime.
It is so bad that third world slums look, and are, better.
Hilton is a pleasant distraction from the disaster in California. He has no chance.
