Multiple American military aircraft were damaged in Iranian strikes overnight Tuesday into Wednesday local time on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, people with direct knowledge of the matter told CBS News.
One A-10 Thunderbolt, an attack aircraft known as the Warthog, was struck and lost a wing, the sources said.
Roughly eight F-15s sustained light damage and were reportedly put back into service, according to the people familiar with the damage, who spoke to CBS News under the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
No U.S. deaths have been reported in the strikes on Jordan.
The overnight damage came after the U.S. said Tuesday it attacked five Iranian tankers in retaliation for Iran targeting a U.S. Navy warship. In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it launched attacks at eight tankers and two warships, including the base in Jordan.
U.S. forces in Jordan launched more than 30 Patriot missiles defending against the Iranian strikes in Jordan.
CBS News previously reported that U.S. officials are concerned over the rapidly declining stockpile of Patriot missiles among other types of precision munitions.
President Trump said Wednesday that Iran is desperate to affect the midterm elections and mused that the war would end right afterward.
"I think the war will end immediately after the election, because they can't hold out any longer," the president told reporters before heading to Texas. "They're desperate to try and affect the election so we can get a nice, weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon."
"All they want is a nuclear weapon and if they had a nuclear weapon the whole world is in deep trouble," he said.
Despite the claims, Mr. Trump said he's not looking to negotiate with Iran in the near future, before the midterms.
"We're not looking for it, to be honest," Mr. Trump said. "Originally I wanted to make a deal. We're so far down the line, they have very little country left right now, so we're not looking for it. Yes, a negotiation could possibly happen but it's not something we're looking at."

Our military has always wanted to get rid of their A-10s, so I assume they’re sending Iran a thank you letter.
That A-10 could probably still fly missing one wing.
Just bolt a new one on and it will be fine. Fly it for another 40 years.
Why are we ok with Pakistan having nuclear bombs?
Pakistan and India are mortal enemies- when India got them Pakistan got them about a month later.
They were not a global threat at the time- only to each other.
The islamification made things worse.
Obviously I’m being sarcastic - I just have never liked the idea of throwing away perfectly good, non-obsolete, systems, like the A10, FOR ANY REASON.

They have them because India has them. They have never called us the great Satan. Pakistanis are for the most part Sunni Muslims so they have no apocalyptic end-of-the-world vision motivating their use. (12er Shia Islam is particularly extreme!) The Iranian 12er Shia regime has been killing Americans since the the 1970s e.g., Marine barracks in Beirut, embassy in Kenya, etc.
Why does this constantly have to be explained
According to what I have read from accounts of our soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq. There is no happier sound for them than the gun on that A10 Warthog. Coming in low to absolutely shred the enemy to pieces. Even more so than the Apache helicopters.
I believe Pakistan’s intent was truly defensive due to India having nucs.
I also believe Pakistan is deterred from using nuc to avoid MAD ( mutual assured destruction)
I do not believe Irans intent is defensive only and certainly do not believe they would be deterred by MAD.

Agreed. I didn’t serve but I’ve heard over and over from troops and other military personnel how much they love the Warthog. I’ve had many people who worked in the places where aircraft are designed saying the Warthog is simply the perfect ground support aircraft and there will not be anything better made for a long time.
Pakistan was born of islamification - it was explicitly created as the homeland for the subcontinent’s Mohammedans.
They have had Shariah law since the 1980s.
The USA armed Pakiland in the 70s and 80s and it came back to bite the USA in the behind on 9/11
Mr K, Reilly - think about it - “Pakistan got the nukes about a month later” - it tested less than a month later, but you aren’t able to spin something up like that in a month - they got them much much earlier
Closer to reality than you think. The USAF has several AFSCs that do battle damage repair, structural repair, sheet metal repair etc. If it can be done, they will do it in the field.

At the time that India and Pakistan both revealed they had nukes (early 2000’s?) I was working for a company that had a large number of Indians and some Pakistanis. The Indians were joking that the reason the Pakistanis revealed their nuke several weaks after the Indians is that it took that long for the Pakistanis to translate the Chinese instructions.
