Trump Argues With Reporter Over Iran "Small Potatoes"
New York Post ^ | September 5, 2026 | New York Post

President Trump called the US-Iran conflict "small potatoes," comparing the six-month long conflict to the Vietnam War. The commander-in-chief pushed back at a reporter who criticized his downplaying of the Iran war, telling her she "wouldn't be standing here very long" because the Islamic Republic would've used a nuclear weapon.

Well, not a good thing to say, and an error or misstatement on Vietnam casualties but a lower casualty war.

I thought this was a statement that put things in context appropriately even if his casualty tally from the Vietnam war was overstated for some reason.

I like it that he goes toe to toe with these douche bags in the media.

I have no problem with it. He makes mistakes occasionally, but I see that as far overshadowed by his willingness to engage with them on their own territory and not shrink away as we have seen other presidents do.

The 18 service members killed and more than 790 wounded will receive Purple Hearts—with a “Small Potatoes” cluster.

So the journalist respects the sacrifices of our soldiers?

Iran is the one losing more people and also having it’s domestic power grid damaged.

That’s the bad part, plenty of people are actors nowadays but I’m sure the comments section is worse. I’m not going to bother with the comments on the video

My first deployment to Iraq was nearly 20 months. The division I was technically with 1AD deployed for ~ 18 months.

The 82nd has been in this conflict for 6 months, non-combat in reality.

Not sure where the reporter gets the “record deployment length” from?

In fact, I would argue, the 6 month idea of a deployment the US tries to shoot for is BS. Forget this notion altogether.

1.) (Time and costs) It takes time to get their and it takes a long time to pack up and get home. A big division with all their equipment takes weeks to really get into place and weeks to get home, even an airborne and light division like the 82nd (I'm not talking about some emergency 72 hour drop them somewhere and pray for the best). With a 6 month deployment, that may sound nice for morale etc., but you'll have nearly 1/3 of the total time just devoted to moving into and out of theater. The logistics of this is extremely expensive as well.

2.) (Nothing can replace first hand experience) It takes time to understand the “lay of the land.” These short deployments might be nice for morale, but they hurt in terms of soldiers and the leaderships true understanding of the situation, understanding the terrain, enemy, your true tasks, the local leaders, how your equipment works under those conditions... No matter how many intel briefs, exercises and simulations back home, you cannot replace the skills and human to human relations that are formed in person when downrange. This can literally cost lives.

If I were an Army leader, I would shy away from even creating a 6 month expectation in what is a potential combat rotation.

Routine (non-war) rotation, absolutely, 6 months is fine. The equipment is already pre-positioned and locally maintained. You're moving onto a FOB that was purpose built and have a well thought out (scripted) plan. It's nearly "turn key."

We’re only using time as a metric, not the burn rates of money, reputation, opportunity costs, etc? 🥸

Not to mention the thousands of Iranian civilians who died as a result of our bombing.

A potato is still a potato. A war is still a war. A sacrifice is a sacrifice and if Trump describes the size of the war doesn’t extend to the sacrifice. Conflating the two is disingenuous.

Exactly! This should be repeated over, and over again.

Persians have been bullies and imperialists for 3000 years. This bunch just uses Allah as an excuse. They already have missiles with more range than was thought.I don’t want my grandchildren caught in a nuclear war started to expressly bring about Judgement Day.
So, yes, small potatoes.

How about the many Iranians who have been killed by their own government simply for protesting, or even for being on the street without head coverings. Where do they fit into your calculus?

The Vietnam War lasted about 20 years, from 1955 to 1975.

Most if not all democrat wars go on for years and years and years... Trump knows that as do all of us... well, most of us.

The Iran 'war' IS small potatoes compared to Vietnam. The Vietnam war tore the country apart - the only thing being 'torn apart' by the Iran conflict is the endless lies and propaganda put out by a corrupt press and their Chinese and Cuban backers.

Estimates for those civilians killed by Iran are in the tens of thousands. Iran under the Ayatollahs had more executions annually than the Shah did multiple times over.

Iran has spend the last few years sacrificing everything to 'get the bomb' so they can kill the great Satan and the little Satan. If they had gotten the bombs they needed to 'do the job' (3 for Israel and 9 for the United States is my guess, they would have dropped them.

Three nukes would kill almost every citizen in Israel. Nine nukes with some exploded high enough up for the EMP effect would kill over 90% of citizens in the United States.

And likely, gagline - that would include YOU and all your family members. How's those potatoes?
