SF high school where 94% flunk math has California’s highest Berkeley acceptance rate

A San Francisco high school where students get top grades simply for showing up now has the highest acceptance rate in the state to the prestigious University of California, Berkeley — as critics blame rampant grade inflation and rock-bottom standards for a surge in ill-prepared college students who end up dropping out.

Mission High School had a 45% acceptance rate into the elite university, with 34 out of its 76 applicants gaining admission last fall, far ahead of the state average of 15%, according to data compiled by the San Francisco Chronicle.

But it’s not because of superior academics, critics say, but rather because of low standards and a lefty policy that eliminated SAT testing requirements in the University of California system, sending a flood of students who can barely do fractions into demanding courses like Calculus.

“Grades were sometimes too easy to earn,” Levi Lum of Mission High told the San Francisco Standard.

“In many required classes, attendance and basic completion could be enough to receive a grade that would ordinarily signal strong proficiency.”

Only 17% of Mission High’s 11th graders scored proficient or above in English, along with a shocking 6% in math on the 2025 state assessment exam, the lowest of any school in the San Francisco Unified School District — which averaged 59% and 43%, respectively.

We need to totally scrap the current educational system and start over from scratch. What we have now isn't working. Also, fire all the administrators in these failing schools and ban them from ever working in education ever again.

Colleges have nothing to do with learning anymore. They’re just Party, Protest, Puke schools. Totally worthless. Fit only for useless morons. It’s called “Learing.” The Somalis teach it to stupid American kids on drugs and Tidepods.

It is all about indoctrination now. Intelligence does not matter, ideology dies.

AI has its problems, but I am quite convinced that we could build an AI tool that would thoroughly and patiently teach anyone basic facts about, say, math or history. The people working in the education system are the problem. Use AI instead.

And, BTW, some kids do not want to learn, and some parents just want to complain about how their little darlings are being abused — fine. Those kids can just go to prison. Not everyone can be a winner in life, but our basic educational approach should reward families that want to be winners.

It’s California so I don’t care but your correct on the education system. Start by end any and all federal aid to any education system, end the Dept of Education, end teachers unions and any school board needs to either be made up of parents with kids in that school district or just end them.

If you look at the class syllabuses for schools such as Berkeley, it’s obvious that most universities are nothing but expensive indoctrination centers.

> fire all the administrators in these failing schools <

Administrators are a huge part of the problem. Yes, there are incompetent and uncaring teachers. However, most of them respect their subject, and want their students to learn.

But many school administrators either have no attendance policy, or do not enforce it. So many students will come to class only when they feel like it. A student who is only in class 2 or 3 times a week will not pass any standardized exam. No chance.

And woe to the teacher who gives honest grades! That makes the school look bad. So guaranteed, that teacher will be called in for an attitude adjustment.

I don’t know about suburban and rural schools. But I taught in an urban public school district. And I’ll tell you this. Urban public schools are beyond saving.

Restore SATs!

No one can learn calculus unless they have mastered advanced algebra, trig, and analytic geometry!

Admission to Berkeley MUST be on the basis of superior high school performance in English, math, science, etc.! If “disadvantaged” racial groups can’t qualify, that’s just the way things go!

I have a SB from MIT, and a PhD from Harvard, so I know! I had to sweat through physics, calculus, differential equations, and physical chemistry at MIT. Berkeley is almost as rigorous!

You are NOT describing MIT—either now or when I went there!

However, MIT is now famous for fraternity parties. When I went there, I never attended a fraternity party!

This is why Colleges are getting rid of grades. Too many of the preferred kids are flunking out so get rid of grades. Problem solved.

“We need to totally scrap the current educational system and start over from scratch.” Steve Jobs said the same thing in 1990. The problem is that teachers and administrators enjoy their excessive paychecks.
