California regulators on Monday approved new rules that will restrict what tires you can buy when it's time to replace them on your car.
In a unanimous vote, the California Energy Commission voted to adopt new rules that will phase out the sale of replacement tires that don't meet certain energy efficiency standards.

I sense a business opportunity in border towns of AZ, NV and OR.
At this point, I am all for electing these —— as required and paying them to sit at home and do absolutely nothing.
I just looked at tires for a 30 year old Honda. What use to be $30 is now $180 per tire. (Getting used tires from the junkyard) Is there ANYTHING the government can’t f up?
The most energy efficient tire is a cinder-block style concrete one that prevents your car from moving. No energy consumed.
This will not go over well with Californians...........
I ran into that in Wisconsin. Stupid. I have old British iron. Late 60’s and early 70’s. I couldn’t get tires mounted. I had to order them online and stretch them onto the rims, and fill them at home in the driveway. I had a Chrysler Van, and they are hard on tires. I wanted to have different ones, but could only get them as factory built at the tire shop.
California Liberals are all about killing car restoration and anything else that has even a tiny bit of fun.
> I think it’s time for a lot or these politicians to retire <
I’m sure it would only get worse. In my limited experience with “progressives”, I’ve found the older ones to be both wrong and angry.
The younger ones are more wrong, and angrier.
No Worries!
Very soon, there will be 200mph train service EVERYWHERE!
Out of control government is out of control.
Don’t complain.
If it were for “national security,” you’d get the same stupid $h&t from the other side of the political spectrum.
The idea of “limited government” got lost somewhere along the way, as did what the real idea of liberalism (maximizing freedom) is all about.
These aren’t elected politicians making these “rules”.
ProTip: If they will cite you, fine you, arrest you, put you in a cage for breaking their “rules”, then guess what? Then they are de facto, in every sense of the word, laws.
“Gladfelty told KCRA 3 this new rule will eliminate an estimated 70% of the tires currently sold in California by 2033.”
Roger that. The same stupid rules were enacted for furnaces, resulting in a massive increase in the price of replacements. Of course gas furnaces are being phased out, just like these tires.
Regulators seem to think consumers are made of money but that’s not the case and this will hurt lower income folks the most. Because everyone needs tires.
Must be like living in the old Soviet Union with a nicer climate.
The new socialists would move in to replace the retiring ones.
I would think the performance tires are hurt the most. The better handling, the less energy efficient.
It’s all about affordability in Commiefornia, yessiree.
When i need tires for my business truck i go up to the tire place a mile away from my house and i get good used tires for $50 a tire. Im getting out of here already but it still chaps my ass. This is just total BS.
The same commies who scream about AI data centers being controlled by the Govt want full control over what tires you can buy and what health care you receive. Its a power trip for communists, they want to control EVERYTHING your life in their hands
