DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced charges Friday against a woman who allegedly vandalized the capital’s World War II Memorial by pouring bubble soap into its fountain and spray-painting a cryptic message on its stone edifice.
Pirro said in an X post that prosecutors in her office were filing two felony charges against Melissa L. Farris, 41, of Elizabethtown, Ky., accusing her of depredation against property of the US and destruction of veterans’ memorials.
Farris was in federal custody as of Friday morning, added Pirro. An initial court appearance was not immediately scheduled.
Each count carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison upon conviction.
A criminal complaint against Farris noted she had also been arrested Monday for unlawfully camping just blocks from the memorial.
“Vandalizing our World War II Memorial is a despicable attack on a sacred monument honoring the Americans who fought and died for our freedom. Those Americans include my father and grandfather,” Pirro wrote.
The memorial fountain bore the message, “Clean Hands Dirty $” in red graffiti Thursday afternoon.
Farris posted several videos shot near the memorial Thursday to Facebook under the pseudonym Melissa Lovewell — including one where she copped to “damaging” the fountain, the criminal complaint alleged.
“I am cognitively aware and executively (sic) of the choices I am making and I am doing so to push my whistleblower case into the courtroom,” she said in one of the videos.
“It was me,” she says in another video that bears the slogan “TEA PARTY” while standing next to the section where red and yellow graffiti had been painted. “I’m here I done did it. Thought I was joking? … I did try and [indecipherable] my spray paint.”
