The residents of the tiny village of Haytor Vale - where neighbours are accustomed to feeling so safe they can leave their doors unlocked - are a community in shock.
Home to fewer than 200 people and nestled on the edge of Dartmoor, this peaceful valley is reeling with the knowledge that police suspect foul play in the death of the former government minister.
Widdecombe was found dead on Thursday morning. As a police investigation and manhunt continues - and amid the tributes and grief - there is also whispered concern that a perpetrator could still be at large.
"It shouldn't have happened, it's horrific," said one neighbour. "It's very, very safe around here."
Another said: "It's unbelievable someone could do something like that."
Meanwhile, the walkers, families and nature lovers who usually populate the village during the summer months have been replaced by police, forensics officers and journalists.

Nigel Farage says he believes Ann Widdecombe's suspected murder was "premeditated"
"From what I make out, this was premeditated murder. Whether it was politically motivated, whether it was someone with a grudge. I don’t think it pays at this time to speculate"
Farage added: "One theory doing the rounds is that it was a burglary gone wrong. But a car went onto the drive at approximately 12.25-12.30 on Wednesday. She had done one interview in the morning… She was due to do another one at 1pm. So if you were a burglar, would you literally drive your car onto someone’s drive?"
BBC will go into Monty Python mode: “The killer, who was white, with skin like Devonshire cream, which was almost translucent in the sunlight of Cornwall, and golden hair like flax, to match his extreme and undeniable whiteness.”
Wasn’t Widdecombe a conservative politician? I recall some British comic talking about her.
Devastating yes. Shocking no. This is how the left deals with outspoken conservatives.
The previous post about this where the police “keenly” revealed the apprehended suspect as a 26year old white male becomes even more interesting. I wonder if the AM interview was broadcasst?
Widdecombe was one of the few British Conservatives who was worth a damn. She was pro-Brexit, very religious, and the antithesis of David Cameron, Boris Johnson or John Major.
She was a minister in John Major’s Conservative government in the 90s and held various other positions until she left parliament..
She was a defector to Reform UK and was still pretty active just not in parliament but often as a pundit on TV etc
Mixed feelings about the police but “lions led by donkeys” is a phrase that springs to mind
Let’s hope they catch the perp who is on the loose it’s very serious.
Ya think? She was found battered and covered in blood, and they suspect foul play.
To be fair, if this was Clinton Country, it might be ruled a suicide. {/S}
Police have made the “active decision” not to release CCTV of the Ann Widdecombe murder suspect
“Releasing such prematurely could compromise ongoing enquiries and may prejudice future investigative opportunities”
Ask Agatha. I’ll bet she can solve it in 3-4 hours.
Wonderful free speech advocate. R I P
Indeed. I liked her for her common sense attitude.
"Nobody has the right to live their lives being protected from offense, or from insult, or from hurt feelings. It is an occupational hazard of living in society. And if you really can't take it, become a hermit."
Police will not release further information on Ann Widdecombe murder case
...“Releasing such information prematurely could compromise ongoing enquiries and may prejudice future investigative opportunities...
Well, that's one explanation...
Devout Catholic and out spoken member of Conservative Christian Fellowship.
They were quick when they claimed to have a suspect .
