Wealthy nations reap huge benefits from immigration, study finds

Wealthy nations with the highest rate of immigration over the past 35 years reaped a large economic benefit and many could still absorb more workers, according to research to be presented at a top European Central Bank conference next week.

Political tensions ‌over immigration have been on the rise in recent years as far-right, anti-immigrant parties have helped drive the issue to near the top of the political agenda while making headway in countries including the U.S., Germany and Britain.

The study, which looked at data in dozens of rich countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, said growth and productivity were both likely to have been boosted sharply by the influx of immigrants, most of whom were highly skilled, despite any political claims to the contrary.

"Receiving countries' labour productivity grew significantly during and after periods of higher immigration rates," said the paper, authored by University of California, Davis professor Giovanni Peri.

"The predictive coefficients are often significant, economically large and a significant portion of such growth in GDP per worker is realized through strong growth in investments," the paper to be presented at the ECB Forum on Central Banking in Sintra said.

Importing Islam is never going to help.

Sure, for making some people filthy rich, but the rest of us are paying the price for it.

They packed a lot of lies into a few words.

Very efficient.

Agree. Importing any group that doesn’t want to assimilate will dilute the native culture.

What workers? I though most of them were on welfare. They have no education or skills. With an average IQ of 81 They’re just a drag on society. They contribute nothing.

The $39 trillion in federal debt wasn’t acquired by people paying their way.

Probably about 90% of the American middle class doesn’t pay its way (~$18,000/person/year[Federal budget $7 trillion/year/350 million residents]).

People on average making 52% of the average income are simply not net taxpayers. Are they bad people as a result? Probably not. Government is simply spending too much.

Our public servants are costly to keep employed.

A real estate tax rate of 1.5% for 40 years means getting 60% of physical things such as houses. Policemen and mainly female teachers are often wonderful, but they simply don’t deserve 60% of all there is nationally.

Third World crap holes are tremendously wealthy. That’s why when the immigrants leave the crap holes and come to fully developed nations, they help the fully developed nations to also become rich. Right?

Simply flinging every person into the USA or EU wouldn’t eliminate poverty.

"Wealthy nations reap huge benefits from immigration, study finds"

Reuters pro-immigration propaganda article doesn't differentiate between legal and illegal immigration effects.

It helps the managerial class with cheap, compliant labor. It screws over US workers, their wages and bargaining power to get raises.

There is only ONE reason to import people: That reason is to increase the labor supply and put downward pressure on wages. THERE IS NO OTHER REASON FOR IMMIGRATION.

Tossing Mr. Old Timer onto the economic scrapheap and replacing him with Mr. Immigrant doesn’t pay off since Mr. Old Timer still has costly needs such as health care and housing.

Is Mr. Immigrant to blame? No, but tossing people aside has a cost that must be paid and it is not $0.

Legal immigration is also bad. All immigration needs to stop for decades.
