Russian envoy teases deal with U.S. for Russia-Alaska underwater tunnel
The Washington Times ^ | June 6, 2026 | Mary McCue Bell

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy said the country and the U.S. will sign an agreement to design an underwater tunnel connecting Russia’s Chukotka region to Alaska across the Bering Strait.

Kirill Dmitriev, who is also head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, made the announcement Thursday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

“As regards, the tunnel, we have a piece of news for tomorrow that we will continue tunnel engineering. The tunnel will take place,” he told Russian TV channel Zvezda, according to a translation by state-owned news agency TASS.

He added that this will be one of the major infrastructure projects between Russia and the U.S.

Mr. Dmitriev said he spoke by phone with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to discuss economic cooperation between Moscow and Washington. U.S. officials have not publicly confirmed the call.

“The most important topic is economic cooperation, as we see many joint economic initiatives that we can implement, and we are actively preparing them,” Mr. Dmitriev said.

“Accordingly, we are preparing for joint investment with the U.S. in various projects that are beneficial for both Russia and the U.S., including in Russia,” he added.

Mr. Dmitriev introduced the “Putin-Trump Tunnel” last October to connect Russia and Alaska through a 70-mile rail-and-cargo link across the Bering Strait.

Well now we know what kind of side deal that Witkoff and Kushner were working on last year with that Anchorage summit between Trump and Putin.

Seems like a clear conflict of interest.

So what could go wrong connecting Russia with Alaska with an undersea tunnel?

It’ll never work. That area of the globe is too geographically unstable.

A lot of miles of railroad track would need to be laid at either end of the tunnel.

Then there is the issue of the incompatible rail gauges. It seems highly impractical to me.

The tunnel itself would probably be the easy part.

Here’s my question: Besides illegal aliens, who the heck would use such a tunnel? It’s not like Alaskans have a burning desire to visit Chukotka, and vice versa.

And what could go wrong? I recall that route from my Risk playing days. It was nothing but trouble for me. I’d lose Alaska to the Rooskies, and so lose the North America bonus.

No. Russia knows how weakly our immigration laws are enforced. All it takes is another democrat in the WH to let floods of east Asians into North America. Canada won’t allow it, but the dumb asses in DC will.

Russia is the world leader in natural resources, much in Siberia. Russia has much of what the West needs. Open free trade with Russia and all this supply side inflation the West is experiencing decreases. Free trade with Russia, not War.

“Russia’s $75 Trillion in Natural Resources
Russia leads the pack with natural resources valued at $75 trillion, largely consisting of coal, natural gas, oil, and rare earth metals. At the end of 2018, Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment valued the country’s mineral reserves at approximately $1.44 trillion....”

I can see that before you know it, Russia will be reclaiming Alaska, and I never played risk. Yeah, it would be a lot of trouble.

Calmate, por favor-that is an earthquake of the week area-totally unstable. So likely wishful thinking on the part of the Times. It doesn’t make economic sense, either-are they going to ship glacier ice back and forth?

Anti-Russia propaganda comes from the globalists.

The globalists are cut from the same cloth as the Soviets.

Ever since Russia broke free from the Soviets, globalists and communists hate them.

The globalists have nothing but deception. It’s their only means for survival. But it’s not enough.

A tunnel costing in the billions, with very little traffic to use it

This idea is DOA!!

Agreed. But much of what the western United States and Canada need? So much that carbo ships alone won’t do the job? So a tunnel is needed?

I’m kidding around here a bit, mentioning the game of Risk. But in all seriousness, this proposed project seems like a solution in search of a problem.

Seems pretty pointless even if the Russians wanted to invade America...its hardly practical.

Every naysayer on this thread is demonstrating they don’t trust President Trump.

But they can’t say it out loud, because they have no confidence in their own opinion.

For what purpose?
If there was any real demand for such a thing,
you would see a ferry service currently operating.

Why is this thread attracting so many anti-American posters?

Trump trusts Putin. Economic partnership with Russia is a smart idea.
