Mamdani throws a lifeline to drowning landlords as he lets a select few off the hook on rent freeze plans

At a press conference Tuesday, Mamdani stressed that no landlords would receive a blanket exemption from a potential rent freeze set by the Rent Guidelines Board.

He added that the provision allowing rent increases 'applies to a select number of units' when they are vacant and is administered by a separate city agency, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Roughly 300,000 apartments financed through the city's housing agencies would be eligible for rent increases once they become vacant, along with other forms of assistance.

That represents about a third of the city's rent-stabilized housing stock and includes major affordable housing owners such as Related.

The Mamdani administration estimates that hundreds of units could ultimately qualify for increases under the policy.

The exemption would apply only to vacant apartments already financed and regulated by city housing agencies, and any increases would be capped by income limits set by the city

Thank you very much and God bless you.

So just like laddered tax rates, there will be laddered application of law.

And, of course, any friend of the Mayor will be able to get an exemption.

Rent freezes and rent-controlled apartments are nothing new. But how in the world are they legal? It would be like telling a grocery store owner that he can keep his store. But all of the prices in the store are set by the government.

Market forces work. Communist policies don’t.

But I suppose you’ll get more votes with communist policies.

One would think the landlords who didn’t get the FOM exemption would be able to take this to court.

Waivers handed out to landlords who are recent commie converts, and to landlords of Socialists friends who live in their waived apartments.

This is the way communism works.

Alberta has been the victom of such Canadian Federal government commie tactics, converning both environmental law and tribal laws.Waivers handed out to commies who become instant millionaires in the oil fields etc., with a healthy back channel bribe payment to boot.

Mamdami needs to be ousted......a Muslim leech.

Mamdani is demonizing “evil landlords” - just as the Bolsheviks did in Russia after the revolution, appropriating their properties for “the people.”

This will not end well - the same way it did for the old Soviet Bosses.
