Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is projected to lose his Kentucky House primary race to President Trump-endorsed challenger Ed Gallrein, according to Decision Desk HQ, a major victory for the president in his bid to oust Republican lawmakers who openly defy him.
Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, was projected to win the GOP primary in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, ending Massie’s 14-year tenure in the deep-red seat.
Trump recruited Gallrein to run against Massie after the incumbent congressman broke with the president on a series of high-profile issues.
Tuesday’s results mark the latest example of Trump’s firm hold on the Republican Party following the president’s successful ouster of Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) in the Louisiana Senate primary on Saturday.
The primary garnered national attention and grew increasingly bitter in its final weeks, with political organizations pouring millions of dollars into the race and prominent national figures descending on Kentucky to campaign for the candidates.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth flew to the state on Monday to campaign for Gallrein, a trip the Pentagon said Hegseth took in his personal capacity. Trump, meanwhile, renewed his call Monday for Massie to be “thrown out of office.”
The contest also shattered the record for the most expensive House primary in history, according to AdImpact, which reported $25.6 million spent on television, radio and digital advertising.
Federal Election Commission (FEC) data — which includes advertising along with other campaign expenses — showed the candidates and outside groups working to influence the race spent roughly $35 million combined.
Massie’s campaign outspent Gallrein’s, $5.8 million to $2.6 million, according to FEC data. But super PACs heavily favored the GOP challenger, spending more than $16.4 million to boost Gallrein compared to roughly $10.1 million backing the incumbent.
The contentious face-off featured vicious and personal television ads, including...

I sincerely hope Gallrein serves the people of Kentucky well (provided he wins the general election, which should happen unless we have a black swan event akin to the 2017 special election in Alabama).
This will go a long way in keeping a lot of house and senate republicans in line with the party’s base. It shows the base is currently very engaged and in no mood for those who cannot support the agenda.
imo
Massie is going to do some damage before he exits.
Massie and Cassidy both gave Biden Huge Victories.
Anyone remember Cassidy going to the Biden White House to tout one of Biden Trillion dollar Budgets?
Massie doesn’t support ICE.
It goes beyond Trump.
They never ask what his voters think of him.
Populism is pretty short lived...
Send in the fat lady, time to sing.
I'm sure he's stunned that he would lose this.
Kentucky might have a great horse race, nut they produce terrible politicians. McConnell Rand Paul, Massey, all from the same stupid state.I hope this guy who just won is gonna be a good guy. I don’t trust Kentucky anymore.
sounds like a significant improvement
Now that the establish got their guy in, does that mean we can finish the wall, pass the SAVE Act, reignite mass deportations, drain the swamp, prosecute Fauci, and cut spending?
Surely the most expensive primary ever has to get us some kind of a big W on the other side?
Do not hold your breath.
The funny thing is that it seems everyone (me included) forgot that Massie brought all this on himself when he made that mystifying decision to support Ron DeSantis’ primary challenge to Trump in 2023-24. For the life of me, I never understood the upside to that move.
Projected. Ping me when this is confirmed.
This is personally devastating for Massie.
He’s gonna have to get girlfriends that aren’t on the payroll.
Like vote against Trump every chance he gets? How will we know the difference?
As Huey Lewis would say, “That’s the power of Trump”
WTF was Lauren Boebert thinking?
Every one of them have pollsters on the payroll.
But may have lost the war.
Sorry, this was the win. Next week the new fabricated dialectic drops.
LiberRETARDIAN Thomas MASSHOLE goes down in flames ... Well, bye.
