A Private Call Reveals Democrats’ Desperation Over Tossing of Map
The New York Times ^ | May 10, 2026 | Reid J. Epstein

Democrats are struggling to respond to a major redistricting setback in Virginia, with some party leaders discussing an audacious and possibly far-fetched idea for trying to restore a congressional map voided by the court but showing little indication they have a clear plan.

During a private discussion on Saturday that included Democratic House members from Virginia and Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the minority leader, the lawmakers vented anger at their defeat at the Virginia Supreme Court, spoke about a collective determination to flip two or three Republican-held seats under the existing map and discussed a bank-shot proposal to redraw the congressional lines anyway, according to three people who participated in the call and two others who were briefed on it.

They did not land on a specific course forward, and Mr. Jeffries and the other members of Congress agreed to consult with their lawyers about the most prudent way to proceed, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private talk.

The conversation reflected the desperation and fury that have gripped the party after the state Supreme Court struck down a favorable map that had been ratified by voters. The most dramatic idea they discussed — which would involve an unusual gambit to replace the entire state Supreme Court, with a goal of reinstating their gerrymandered map — drew mixed reactions on the call, said the people, and it was not clear that it would even be viable...

--SNIP--

One key to the plan would be having Democrats in Richmond lower the mandatory retirement age for state Supreme Court justices, an idea that began circulating among state lawmakers and members of Congress after a column proposing a version of the idea was published on Friday night in The Downballot, a progressive newsletter.

The Virginia rats have not been this agitated since the country took their slaves away.

The entire left-wing agenda is rooted in and inspired by hatred of capitalism and free markets and liberty and freedom. There’s no compromise with it! There’s no getting along with it. There’s no meeting them halfway. They have no desire for anything like that. They’re not open to it. They’re not capable. These people… They are anti-democratic.

They do not respect the authority vested in this country by the Constitution when it doesn’t go their way, when things don’t go their way.

I worry they’ll resort to massive voter fraud - the real kind: where the people who stay home are ‘voted’ by democrat precinct people in the black community. (directed by white democrats but done in the black community)

It’s how some areas in Detroit years ago rumor had it that in some precincts 100% of citizens ‘voted’. It’s how (due to a mistake hitting the wrong chad spot with an ice pick) a Republican ‘won’ his race because of the large black ‘vote’...

Couple that with the proposal to lower the mandatory retirement age to 54? Is that age discrimination? The mere fact they are talking it this should be used to chastise any Republican legislature hedging on redrawing their maps. The Dems will do anything for power.

In the 2012 presidential election, ten Colorado counties had over 100% voter participation. My county was number ten with only 104% voter participation. The worst county had 150% voter participation. There was not much concern and the newspaper stories that had the statistics got disappeared.

What passes for principle with the Dems is this: if you can’t win with the rules as they are, change them.

In 2020 there numerous precincts with over 100% turnout and it was fine because every damn one of them went Democrat.

The dems truly believe that every person who doesn’t vote should be counted as a vote for them. They think it’s not fair that every ballot doesn’t default to the Democrat. They think that is not Democracy.

I lived in Detroit metro in the 1990s. The local tv news could do stories about voter turnout being reported over 100% in many precincts of Detroit city proper.

But they handled it laughingly. As a silly “there is goes again” type of way. But it was the same story year after year.

They care nothing for the law or the State’s constitution. Their answer is to get rid of the current justices and appoint unscrupulous ones to do their bidding. Absolutely reprehensible! These people are pure evil.

What some democrats think is it’s OK to cheat because they’re ‘entitled’ to win. And it seems Hakeem Jeffries has anger management issues and a few loose screws...
