Starmer Greets Calls to Resign With a Simple Answer. No.
The New York Times ^ | MAY 10, 2026 | Stephen Castle

After disastrous elections for Labour in England, Scotland and Wales last week, the mood in Britain’s governing party is so rebellious that calls are growing for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign.

Mr. Starmer, who won a landslide victory in 2024, has not only rejected that idea from some in his party, but, in an interview with The Observer newspaper, also suggested he could stay in power for 10 years.

But one Labour lawmaker and former minister, Catherine West, has called on the cabinet to mount a putsch against the prime minister, warning that, if it fails to do so, she could attempt to trigger a leadership contest herself.

Britain has changed its prime minister five times in a little more than a decade. Could it be about to happen again?

What prompts a Labour challenge?

The center-right Conservative Party has frequently replaced unpopular prime ministers, but it has rules different from those of the Labour Party, which has done this rarely.

The last time was in 2007, when Tony Blair was forced out, but that was after he had been 10 years in Downing Street, and he ultimately agreed to step aside.

To trigger an election to replace the prime minister under Labour’s rules, a challenger would need the support of 81 Labour lawmakers, 20 percent of the total. Mr. Starmer would automatically be on the ballot, and the final decision would be taken by party members.

Ms. West does not so far seem to have the numbers in Parliament and is not presenting herself as a credible alternative prime minister. Her idea appears to be to force the pace of change, either by prompting a cabinet rebellion or by flushing out other potential successors to Mr. Starmer and forcing them to make a run against him.

Britain committed cultural suicide. The British nation is crumbling. Starmer is the perfect undertaker.

He doesn’t have a choice... In a parliamentary system the party in power rules the government. The Prime Minister is merely the leader of that party and the party caucus decides who the leader is. The essential problem is this... The Labour party has a majority, so no matter who’s in charge they will still be running the government until the next schedule election in 2029.

If he resigns they will have a leadership contest and they will just install another lame left leaning leader... And that new leader will likely be even more liberal than Starmer already is. There is no hope for the Labour party... They will almost certainly lose the next election... So they will wait until the very end of their mandate in 2029 to call one and the damage they can do between now and then is enormous.

If he stays, the USA goes, will close all bases, end intel sharing, and adios to communist Kier Starmer.

They sent King Charles over on charm offensive to Trump. Deployed their Navy “boat” to Middle East to act like supporting USA but they don’t. Eaten up with DEI and Climate Change lies/bs.

The UK is a muslim nation now and cannot be trusted. Time to walk away.

I lived there 5 years and then worked there off/on intensive business for the next 25 years. They have gone off the deep end on transgender and every looney left cultural relativism.

It is time for USA to exit. We cannot help them and they will not help us.

They’ll have to drag him out kicking and screaming. 🙄

He knows too much, basically.

The only way to move him out is if the labour party votes him out as party leader, then he can no longer be Prime Minister.

The UK Prime Minister can call a snap election before their party proceeds with (or even triggers) a formal leadership contest.

Looks like a jolly good time to renew the Tower of London's original function, except these days rather than have a hooded bloke with an axe they'll have a swarthy Muslim wielding a large scimitar.

“Mr. Starmer, who won a landslide victory“

There’s that quote again. Labour got in with 35% of the vote.

Deployed their Navy “boat” to Middle East...

HMS Dragon is the dumbest-looking destroyer I've ever seen. It has a huge red dragon painted on its bows, both sides. Makes the ship a beautiful target for whatever Iran might want to throw at it. It doesn't have anywhere near the capability of US destroyers. Meanwhile the French have sent their only aircraft carrier to the region. I think the Brits and French want to be there at the end to try to take credit and to grab whatever loot they can.

I hope he doesn’t resign. By staying on he will drag Labour the rest of the way down the sewer drain and give Reform a simple majority in the parliamentary elections.

He should have said “nuts.” At least then there would be some historical basis.

OTOH, the clearest indication that a politician is going to resign is when s/he says, “I am not going to resign.”
