Jewish community leaders are blasting California’s Secretary of State for publishing a voter information guide statement from a fringe gubernatorial candidate who espoused anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.
Don J. Grundmann, an independent with no party affiliation and no prior political experience, is among dozens of candidates who qualified for the ballot. California residents are receiving their voter guides in the mail this month ahead of the June primary.
Grundmann’s statement includes a litany of conspiracies, including claims that conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was killed by an Israeli bomb and that Israeli “art students” brought down the Twin Towers on 9/11.
“These are not only offensive ideas, they are dangerous falsehoods, many of which are amongst lies that have fueled hatred and violence against Jews for centuries,” the Jewish Federation Los Angeles said in a statement Thursday. The organization expressed outrage that Grundmann’s missive was printed as-is.
The moment authorities said a man armed with guns and knives tried to storm the White House Correspondents' Association dinner
Secretary of State Shirley Weber, however, says she had no authority to censor it.
Candidates are allowed to purchase space in the voter guide to make a statement, with a limit of 250 words, but state guidelines are somewhat vague on restrictions. The statements are not allowed to reference other candidates and are supposed to be limited to “a recitation of the candidate’s own personal background and qualifications.”
Above Grundmann’s statement is a disclaimer reading, “The views and opinions expressed by the candidates are their own and do not represent the views and opinions of the Secretary of State’s office.”
It was the only candidate statement in the guide that included a disclaimer.
“Preventing racism and discrimination has been a cornerstone of Secretary Weber’s life’s work,” her press office said in a statement published by The Orange County Register. “As a constitutional officer, she is bound to operate in adherence with the law, which currently only allows the state to reject candidate statements if they reference a candidate’s opponent.”
The Federation called Weber’s decision to publish the statement “indefensible and reprehensible.”
“We categorically reject claims that state and federal law left the Secretary with no choice but to publish and disseminate this disgusting material,” the Federation’s statement continued. “While the United States Constitution protects even the most abhorrent hate speech from government suppression, the First Amendment does not require the government itself to print and distribute it.”
The organization is demanding that state leaders take responsibility for printing the conspiracies and enact safeguards to prevent public resources from being used as a vessel to “spread hate” going forward.
KTLA has reached out to Weber’s office for comment.
The top two finishers in the June primary, regardless of party, will advance to November’s general election. Grundmann has not registered any measurable support in statewide polling, and government records show he has unsuccessfully run for U.S. Senate in California five times.

A bomb killed Charlie Kirk?!?!
And I'm sure there are people who think Mossad was behind 9/11, but Israeli art students? Did they use paper mache?
Maybe this guy wants to make Gavin Newsom look sane?
‘Reprehensible’ Antisemitic Conspiracies Published in California’s Voter Guide. It’s almost like some people don’t care for Jews.
There seems to be more crazy people around now than ever before.
“Grundmann’s statement includes a litany of conspiracies, including claims that ... Israeli “art students” brought down the Twin Towers on 9/11.”
And all this while I had been operating under the assumption that the Twin Towers had been taken down by Israeli hairdressers! I’m glad Grundmann straightened me out on this.
There were Israelis who seemed happy watching the carnage. Fox News covered it at the time.
So, it wasn’t Muslims who were celebrating?
Yes, but if you see our society, it’s not a surprise.
“Don J. Grundmann, an independent with no party affiliation and no prior political experience....”
He has no experience at actually getting elected but he’s got plenty of experience at running for office. He’s been running in California since 1990. He ran for state House 3 times (as a Republican) then for federal office 10 times as an Independent.
He’s never received more than 2.3% of the vote the last 10 times, but he’s getting more publicity today than he had in the past 35+ years.

Maybe voters ought to be aware of whatever crazy ideas a candidate has.
