Iranian drone hits the only UAE refinery that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, injures three Indians

You know how gas prices are already skyrocketing?

Well...

Fire reported at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone in the UAE following an Iranian drone strike. pic.twitter.com/Kps0lfvJRF— Breaking911 (@Breaking911) May 4, 2026

Fujairah is the only UAE refinery that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway between the Arabian Gulf and Iran that is currently locked down by Iranian mines/rockets and the U.S. Navy.

The region produces a third of the world's oil, and a crucial percentage (hundreds of millions of barrels daily) are bypassing the strait by using the Fujairah refinery.

Or ... they were (no word yet on how this has affected capacity).

From the BBC:

A large fire has broken out at the key oil port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after it was hit by a drone attack from Iran, local officials say.

Three Indian nationals were injured in the strike, officials said.

At this point, I'm starting to wonder if you couldn't fire missiles randomly at any point on earth and hit Indians 😭

Hours before the refinery explosion, the UAE said it shot down three Iranian drones/missiles with its air defense systems, while a fourth splashed down in the sea. That number quickly got updated after the second wave of kinetic threats:

(227 people in the UAE have been injured by Iranian missiles and drones since the start of the conflict, according to Emrati officials.)

According to the BBC, Iran says this is all fake news.

Iran called the claims 'entirely false' and its military said it fired warning shots at a US warship.

Yeah, okay then. I don't think The Donald bought that excuse.

We need to recruit the South Koreans to protect the Indian workers in the Arabian Gulf from Iranian drones made by China so Americans can get cheap gas!!

The fact the hit the one that bypasses the Strait says a lot. Trump needs to stop playing with these fools.

Since Iran is a competitor of Iran I wouldn’t be surprised if UAE took out Kharg Island. 200 million barrels off the market makes their oil twice as valuable.

April 15 (Reuters) - Iran secretly acquired a Chinese ‌spy satellite in late 2024 that has allowed it to target U.S. military bases across the Middle East during the current war, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, an account Beijing dismissed as untrue.

The TEE-01B satellite, built and launched by Chinese company Earth Eye Co, was acquired by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Aerospace Force after it was launched into space from China, the report said, citing leaked Iranian military documents.

BRAVE AI:

Israel has deployed advanced anti-missile and drone defense technology to the UAE to counter Iranian attacks during the recent conflict. According to reports from the Financial Times, this includes a version of the Iron Beam laser-based air defense system, the Iron Dome system, and the Spectro surveillance platform.

Key details of the deployment include:

Iron Beam: A ground-based high-energy laser system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, designed to intercept and vaporize short-range rockets and drones at a low cost per shot.

Spectro: A lightweight detection system capable of tracking incoming drones, such as Shahed models, from up to 20 kilometers away.

Iron Dome: An additional missile defense battery was sent, operated by several dozen Israeli military personnel stationed in the UAE.

Context: The UAE faced over 500 ballistic missiles and 2,000 drones from Iran; most were intercepted using this multi-layered defense network, which also involved real-time intelligence sharing from Israel.

This move marks a significant expansion of security cooperation under the Abraham Accords, with some systems deployed in prototype stages to rapidly address the intensity of the aerial threats.

Does Iran have any functional crude oil distilleries?

BRAVE AI:

Yes, Iran has numerous functional crude oil distilleries (refineries) that are currently operational, with a total domestic refining capacity of approximately 2.6 million barrels per day as of 2026. These facilities are managed primarily by the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) and are critical for meeting the country’s domestic fuel demand and exporting refined products.

Key operational refineries include:

Abadan Refinery: Located in Khuzestan Province, it has a capacity of approximately 430,000 barrels per day and is one of the oldest and largest in the world.

Isfahan Refinery: With a capacity of roughly 375,000 barrels per day, it is a cornerstone for domestic fuel supply in central Iran.

Bandar Abbas Refinery: Situated near the Strait of Hormuz, it has a capacity of about 360,000 barrels per day and serves as a strategic hub for exports to Asian and Gulf markets.

Other Facilities: Significant operational refineries also exist in Tehran, Arak (Imam-Khomeini), Tabriz, and Shiraz, with capacities ranging from 30,000 to 250,000 barrels per day.

While Iran is a net exporter of petroleum products like residual fuel oil and LPG, its refineries historically face challenges in producing sufficient high-quality, low-sulfur gasoline and diesel to meet all domestic standards, often relying on modernization efforts to upgrade older units built before 1979.

I’d say that the UAE has a target list.

Is the UAE primarily Sunni?

Nations have no “friends.”

They have interests.

Before 2004 there was outright cooperation, especially in the GWOT and yes even Iran.

NATO expanded into Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia that year, after which things changed drastically. Russia began rearming a little, enough to deal with us trying to constantly encroach into their space as we tried again in 2008 with the Republic of Georgia (where they stopped us with force).

But post October 2021 and Ukraine, it’s a return to trying to “butt-F” each other in proxy conflicts.

This caused a war, but also escalated the proxy games as we are now outright adversarial (why looking into the sea and air over Denmark is so important - and thankfully the Euros are now doing “a little bit.”): https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukrainian-president-zelenskiy-holding-talks-with-biden-adviser-says-2021-12-09/

What we have going for us, is that Russia is weak (1/5 our economy effectively, 44% our population, less high tech), is mired down in Ukraine (a huge conflict sucking up all their resources), and they do not want to fully mobilize their economy and population for war as this has horrible consequences long term.

So how hard can they really play against us?
