Suspect in custody after shooting at Chicago hospital leaves 1 police officer dead, 1 critical

A suspect is in custody after a shooting inside a Chicago hospital left one police officer dead and another critically injured on Saturday morning, law enforcement sources said.

Around 10:45 a.m., two Chicago police officers were shot at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, located at 5140 N. California Ave. in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood.

Police took the suspect to the hospital to be checked out before going to jail for a separate offense before the shooting broke out, police sources told NBC Chicago.

One of the officers was shot in the head, sources told NBC Chicago. Both were taken to a different area hospital, where one was later pronounced dead and the other was initially listed in critical condition.

A manhunt for the suspect ensued, with authorities swarming the hospital and nearby area. Alderman Andre Vasquez to ask residents in the surrounding area to shelter in place amid the manhunt.

Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital was placed on a lockdown after the shooting. The lockdown was lifted by 2 p.m. but the hospital remained closed.

Endeavor Health said the suspect was brought in for treatment around 9 a.m. and was scanned for weapons upon arrival, in accordance with the hospital's public safety weapon detection protocols.

The suspect was "escorted by law enforcement at all times" while in the hospital before escaping after the shooting, Endeavor said in a statement around 1:30 p.m. "No team members or patients were physically harmed as a result of this incident. The safety of our patients and team members remains our top priority."

"This is a horrible situation all around. Hoping the staff and those present at Swedish Covenant Hospital are also okay," said Alderman Gilbert Villegas in a post on social media.

Ok so I have first hand knowledge about the situation for I work at Swedish hospital Chicago. I got alerts on my cell phone before I arrived to work so I knew what was going on before I arrived the event was resolved. I can tell you it was a Yogi criminal. So he was a robbery suspect caught and being processed he was said to swallow 6 bags of cocaine. It’s pretty typical to have police escort and follow under guard such a patient handcuffed to the bed. and they are screened searched and . He was ordered an MRI to determine where in the GI tract where the coke bags were. MRI’s require no metal whatsoever so as one of the cops were uncuffing him into plastic zip ties a struggle ensued and the criminal grabbed the cops own gun and shot him in the head and a second cop there for the same reason was also shot outside of the ER room. A peer of mine responded to the first alert a Code Blue, shortly there after an active shooter alert was called, my coworker walked right into a very bloody situation. Now the murderer had to get out of the ER but you cant just walk out you need a badge to escape, so at gunpoint he ordered a worker their badge to escape. This is a rare occurrence, for I have worked at very large hospital systems all over the Chicagoland area for over 30 years. The hospital is in a very good area, Andersonville an old Swedish American area of Chicago. The murder was caught pretty quick there were hundreds of cops, state police, and SWAT all arrived. He was found in the area naked, for all he had on at the time was a paper gown. Im not sure if he still had the gun on him because a lot of us were supprised that the cops just did not kill him right where he was found, that happens, lightens paperwork. In both of the two Daley’s terms he would be offed right than and now if not than in general population prison but bunk with an White Brotherhood dude already serving life, but probably will be in total confinement for a long while for his immediate safety. Also there is a new law in Illinois if you kill a cop you get life without parole so his lifespan is up to debate. I currently do not know the status of the second cop that was transfered to another hospital as of right now
