Trump is nudging Alito and Thomas toward retirement

Donald Trump’s three appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court have already helped engineer a constitutional counterrevolution. But he’s clearly frustrated that “his” justices aren’t always blindly loyal to his interests. As we draw closer to a midterm election in which Democrats are likely to flip at least one chamber of Congress, Trump is dropping some strong hints that he’d like to make more lifetime appointments to the Court while he still can.

In an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump hinted pretty strongly that he wants more Supreme Court openings right now:

Trump told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo that Alito, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, could retire and that he has a shortlist of nominees in mind, though he did not mention any names.

“In theory, it’s two — you just read the statistics — it could be two, could be three, could be one,” Trump said. “I don’t know. I’m prepared to do it. But when you mention Alito, he is a great justice.” Commenting on this interview, CNN’s Aaron Blake noted some more nudges from the president:

I hope Thomas and Alito remain as long as They and/or the Lord decide. (The newer crop hasn’t seemed to be of comparable quality.)

Strong indications Alito is going to retire soon.

Without Clarence Thomas the Demwits would have gutted the Second Amendment by now.

not exactly. he loves them - and depends on them. he also
understands that the window for confirmation is open now and who knows about Senate post-midterms.

Any opinions on who he's considering to replace them?

I used to feel that way, then I will remind myself just how heavy the duty and responsibility is when you are a Supreme Court Justice. Both men have been serving for quite some time. I recall how Joe Biden interrogated then Atty. Clarence Thomas back in 1990. He’s been through the wringer coming and going. He and his wife.

I don’t know a lot about Justice Alito, except that he has been in that position for the last 20 years, replacing
‘the sainted’ Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

Each man may be about ready to walk away and live their lives away from this position. Trump would not be throwing heavy-weighted hints that it’s okay to go now, if he wasn’t ready to nominate certain people right now.

We can never get another Conservative passing the Senate with its RINOs.

Who knows what the makeup of the Senate will be after the midterm elections?

This summer would be prime time to fill a Supreme Court vacancy.

Tough decision. One school of thought says that being able to nominate someone before the expected losses at mid-term would be the wisest course of action.

However, even if we lose the House, we probably won’t lose the Senate (although the margin will be close, and some wishy-washy Republicans will be part of our majority).

It probably won’t happen, but I would rather have someone like DeSantis making any future nominations to the Court instead Trump. Trump hasn’t done extremely well at it.

Have each desired replacement confirmed to a federal district court first.

That way we can have more faith a candidate can be confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.

Why didn’t you make the allegation at the previous confirmation hearing, Miss Joanne Come Lately?

Senator Bray, this is the same person that passed through our committee two months ago!

Agreed, it will be almost impossible to find two justices as conservative as Alito and Thomas,,,and just as hard to get them through the Senate. I fear squishy conservatives at best,,,sigh.

It is still better than to wait to 2028.

Hopefully Trump will get better advice on replacement justices than he received in his first term.

They can’t be removed. They have a lifetime appointment.

"if he wasn’t ready to nominate certain people right now"

That's what I worry about.
Some of his picks didn't turn out like he (we) expected (e.g. Amy Conehead Barret).
