Fury as new Social Security estimate completely ignores out-of-control price increases raging across America
Daily Mail ^ | April 16, 2026 | Benjamin Curry

There’s a new forecast of the Social Security boost retirees should expect in 2027 - and it’s a huge disappointment for the millions of Americans who depend on their bi-monthly benefit checks...

Older Americans absolutely rely on this so-called ‘cost of living adjustment’ or COLA, since more than 40 percent of them depend on Social Security alone for all of their retirement income.

The new estimate of the forthcoming official 2027 cost-of-living adjustment shows the average Social Security benefit check will only rise by $56, or roughly 2.8 percent.

The average benefits check for retired workers would increase to $2,081 from $2,025.

That’s the same COLA adjustment as the one seen in 2026, despite the astonishing price hikes we’ve seen recently throughout the US economy.

‘Seniors tell us over and over that their benefits don’t go as far as they used to,’ said Shannon Benton, executive director of The Senior Citizens League, which published the new estimate...

The new Senior Citizens League estimate comes after the government's March inflation and prices report card gave the US economy an 'F', showing that prices jumped by almost 1 percent last month.

That pushed the annual inflation rate up to 3.3 percent, its highest level in two years - and well above the forecasted COLA hike.

The Iran war is the main culprit behind soaring prices, as fighting in the Middle East sent energy prices up nearly 11 percent on the month.

But forget the energy shock, the craziest price increases aren’t just at the pump, but also essential healthcare costs like the nearly 10 percent 2026 increase in Medicare part B premiums and deductibles.

“Nearly everyone enrolled in Medicare pays a monthly premium for Part B coverage,' warned Suze Orman, best-selling personal finance author and two-time Emmy Award-winning television host.

If Trump -- and the GOP Congress -- intervened to raise the COLA adjustment, that would be very helpful for the GOP in the midterm elections.

Meh,

Let the demographic most in support of this war take the hit for it

Maybe even a benefit cut to support the new defense budget instead or strangling our kids with debt

I don’t think we were at risk of being nuked, however even if it that were true the bill has to be paid

As a SS recipient, of course I’m all for getting a payment increase when the true cost of living percentage goes up because of the war’s effect on the price of oil. I’m not sure I’d be all that happy if, being consistent, if the cost of living went down after this is all over and things stabilized and, as a result, adjusted the payments down. Pure hypothetical, I know.

It will also accelerate the point at which the reserves are exhausted and a serious political war over funding of SS, Medicare, welfare, etc. Either benefits get cut - a lot - or taxes go up - a lot - or the politicians attempt to rely on deficit spending with resulting snowballing of government debt. Or some mixture thereof. That day of reckoning is only about 6 years out now, less if we adjust things upward today.

Social Security was the Leftist’s proverbial “camel’s nose in the tent” for making America a socialist country before Cloward and Piven were out of their red doper diapers.

And it’s still taxed, unless you fall into a zone that is described in his Byzantine rules, and it expires in 2028. Also, the earnings cap is still there. If someone gets their social security payment, there is a strict limit on how much they can earn with another job.

If they are never going to have honest COLA, and never going to end taxes on it, at least have the common decency to remove the cap on how much you can earn while being a recipient. That way old people can take a job and try to keep up these days.

They won’t hurt the job market. And the reason they supposedly are bringing in tens of millions of migrants to America is to fill jobs. So why not let SS recipients compete for those jobs.

Gas is the only thing that i can tell that has not come down ,since Trump took office. “Raging out of control prices” is pure nonsense. Gas is leveling out and will soon be down. Gas was over $4.00 a gallon and over $100.00 a barrel for 4 years when Obama was in office. They won’t say a thing about that.

Not being nuked benefits all Americans.

But Manuel OKelley is not here for an honest debate, he's a low-level troll that will post anything with a negative twist to it with respect to President Trump.

It would appear that his goal is to try and seperate MAGA from President Trump.

With all due respect to seniors, they are the wealthiest demographic in the US population. Young working people are the ones getting killed. There is no COLA in their wages or their “Medicare Part B” - because they have no health insurance.

The inflation predictions are useless.

Social Security will not even calculate the 2027 cost of living increase until October.

In other words, five months from now.

Unfortunately, our monthly Medicare premiums also go up each year.

We probably lose a little Social Security cash value every year, regardless of the inflation adjustment.

Trump wants to double the military budget to over 1.5 trillion and start a new war. But no money for deserved Social Security COLA adjustments.

The ignoramus even came out and said he doesn’t have money for Medicare, child care etc, because he has a war to fight.
That kind of short sighted crap is going to kill us at the midterms.

Just once, the Republicans should at least PRETEND they care about American middle class people more than foreign adventures.

I am paying 100 dollars to fill up my pickup, steak is 22 bucks, health insurance and electric rates are exploding. And we just get more AI data centers.

He needs to wake up...fast.

Not always. Once you reach your Full Retirement Age, there is no earnings cap. It’s still subject to taxation, but your SS is not reduced regardless of how much you make.

Yes. The social security cola formula was revised a number of years ago. It was previously more generous to social security recipients than was the “cola” (average wage increases) that working folks wages had been getting over the same period.

The social security cola was revised to be more in line with wage increases that workers were getting. And it makes sense. We all experience inflation, but why should social security recipients get rewarded with cola rates above wage increases of active workers?

Then you're not paying attention. Iran was very close to having a nuclear weapon and they already have the means to deliver them at Israel.

The only question is whether they would immediately launch at Israel or wait until they had longer range missiles so they could launch at Israel and the United States at the same time.

Through the last 47 years, they have chanted "Death to America; death to Israel" thousands of times. You should believe they absolutely would if they could.
