WASHINGTON — Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s top aide Ricky Buria told colleagues last year that he and his boss donned disguises and went out drinking together — a juicy bit of gossip that’s widely believed to be a lie and recklessly planted to sniff out leakers, The Post has learned.
Two sources said that Buria, 44, told them separately in early 2025 that he and Hegseth, 45, slipped past the secretary’s security detail while he was staying at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Pentagon City.
There’s no proof that the great escape actually happened, but the tale has reverberated within the administration and stoked continued frustration with Buria’s powerful role leading US military policy.
Many people close to or inside the Trump administration say they believe Buria, a Biden administration holdover who formed a fast friendship with Hegseth, was ham-handedly attempting to catch leakers — but put the secretary at risk of scandal in the meantime.

On the classified projects I was on tidbits of information were planted at different locations. If those bits got out or became rumors, then the investigators had a place to start their investigation.

I knew an admiral who got suspicious of his aide one time and decided to make up a story and told him. Three days later the story found its way back to the admiral. He fired the aide that day. The aide’s career was over.
What happened to the sanctity of anonymous sources? Isn’t that supposed to be inviolate; the foundation of the whole house of cards?

I was a probation officer for 45 years. The Judge had been a JAG officer and Captain. In 45 years, if told something that was not to be revealed elsewhere, I never once failed the order.

I worked on a majorly classified project in the Ninties. Rumours got out about the project. Counter-Intel investigated, planting their own rumors, as you say, and just wanderied around cafeterias and break rooms.
They investigated the contractors first, of course, because everyone “knows” that civilians can’t keep their mouths shut. All contractor facilities were cleared. They next went to the military components, and found the source of the rumors right away. They apparently originated in the military component HQ section.
The father of a good friend was a bodyguard for “Bull” Halsey. As such, he was often in close contact with the Admiral, and had many great stories, also heard various conversations. Many years later (1970s-80s) there were things he absolutely would not talk about.
