Albertsons is closing additional stores and cutting jobs nationwide as it works to stabilize operations following the collapse of its $24.6 billion merger with Kroger, intensifying pressure on the grocery chain.
The Boise, Idaho-based company — which operates banners including Safeway, Vons and Pavilions — has announced a new round of closures in recent weeks as it pivots to cost-cutting and operational changes.

Regarding the merger failure with Kroger, I've spoken to several Albertsons employees about this, and each and every one was glad that the merger fell through. Similarly, I know of not even one Alberstons or Fred Meyer (Kroger) shopper who wanted the merger to happen. We're okay with cost cutting, just keep the brand and the healthy stores.
I thought that might be the case. No fallout, planned all along.
I only notice 2 competent grocery chains growing - Publix and Wegman’s. Maybe Trader Joe’s. Aldi is garbage here. I feel sorry for people that have to shop at a Safeway or a Giant. You deserve better.
A Safeway in San Mateo, Ca. is being torn down and replaced with needed housing. That was an easy call.
Wegmans is a rip off. Way too expensive.
Lowe’s Foods does very well. It’s a regional chain.
Kroger just closed 60 stores. I know Albertson’s closed stores in the past two years, as well.
I will say their prices are generally high, compared with other options, but their stores are clean and well-stocked. They have so much that is the same as elsewhere—nothing really targeted to be locally desired over what is in a different part or the country in their stores, there.
I go to Safeway for a few items, but all my major shopping is at Walmart and here in CA we have the discount chain Winco, which is in many but not all states from Texas west. Even the most casual shopper can’t help but notice that Wincos prices are 10,20 even 30% cheaper than regular grocery stores for exactly the same products. If I weren’t so lazy I’d do all my shopping there
The one that I worked at served the most expensive D.C. areas in the NW sector of D.C. We would get Congressional members, Senators, TV personalities, etc. So, even though it was one of the better ones, it was not impressive at all, in my opinion. Albertson's were impressive, though I didn't see them in my area, I would see them when in other states, such as Texas I believe is here I first saw one personally.
There will always be supermarkets. Unfortunately employees have to deal with the turbulence.
Economic violence. Heard it somewhere.
Ah, yes - "less in-store workers" - the hallmark of the fall of customer service.
Every Trader Joe's we visit seems to always be busy, with lots of smiling employees. They are all so busy that many stores, buildings that are next to any Trader Joe's has to have signs stating, specifically, No Trader Joe's Parking.
I agree on Wegman’s. Too expensive and too big. They are growing though. Publix sticks out because they do everything right. They are on every corner in FL and while expensive, if you manage their sales they are as cheap as Walmart for grocery items. Meat is a different topic - you shouldn’t be buying anything other than ground beef at your super market anyway.
I’m mainly familiar with Safeway and Jewel Osco in the Albertson family. In my experience they are dismal dreck commpared to Publix and Hyvee (which are employee owned).
Yes it is
The one at Tyncastle was my go to back when I owned a place at Hound Ears
Publix is well run but pricey
They rarely run sales in nice zip codes
But Monday or Tuesday are sale days
We had some nutcases, byt I never saw any violence. I’m sure that has changed without question.
Lowe’s Foods parking is generally near full most days.
I can walk to the one near me.
They have a weekly flyer that changes on Thursday of each week. You can go to publix.com and see what’s BOGO, on sale and on Wednesdays you can see what’s GOING to be on sale tomorrow. So if you need Ketchup - wait a day and get it BOGO.
I guess meat and veggies are $$$ but I buy my paper towels from my Publix 5 minutes away b/c they’re cheaper when BOGO than Walmart or Amazon. And they’re Brawny.
Not sure where you meant by here.
Out here in the intersection of the biblebelt, cornbelt, and rustbelt, Aldi is top notch.
I do 95% of my grocery shopping at Aldi and the rest at my other two choices which are Kroger's and Walmart.
Over the last few years, their meat and poultry have really improved.
I bought half a pork loin for 2.09 a pound and cut them into really fine boneless loin chops for the freezer.
A couple of week ago I bought some nice chicken tenders for 2.29 a pound.
Winco USED to stand for
Washington
Idaho
Nevada
California
Oregon
I hope they’ve expanded into more states, as they’re THE place for cheap groceries!
