Donald Trump said he was willing to end the Iran war without a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president, with no concrete signs of a diplomatic breakthrough, suggested that if negotiations collapsed, he would “obliterate” Iran’s energy and water facilities, but leave the vital waterway under Iranian control.
He wrote on his Truth Social platform: “Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business’, we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their electric generating plants, oil wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinisation plants!)...”
Karoline Leavitt, ***appeared to reiterate the president’s remarks, saying on Monday that the US was working to reopen the strait but she failed to list it as one of four “core objectives” in the war.
In his post, Mr Trump did not repeat earlier threats to land troops on Kharg Island or other parts of southern Iran to reopen the crucial sea lane by force.
The White House is under growing pressure to resolve the conflict, which has triggered a global energy crisis. But the president is also aware that deploying American troops could be costly and sap his personal approval ratings further.
On Saturday, a US marine expeditionary unit with the USS Tripoli arrived in the Middle East, while a second unit attached to the USS Boxer is on its way. Together, they comprise about 5,000 assault troops.
Hundreds of special forces soldiers have been mobilised.
The comments suggest the US could abandon the war in Iran without finding a way to reinstate freedom of navigation in the Gulf, presumed to be a key war goal.

I know Iranians personally who are praying, one who went to church for the first time over all of this starting last summer — praying both for peace *and* change of the regime. God bless them.
May it happen on God’s terms and not man’s.
Something tells me Trump will have to seek asylum in Israel once his term ends in ‘29. Depends on elections.
It is up to the sane people of Iran to overthrow these lunatics!
“Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business’, we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their electric generating plants, oil wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinisation plants!)...” Tell us how you really feal about Iran, Mr. President.
Iran is a nation of over 90 million. It’s been undergoing a steadily worsening water supply problem that was created by damming for agriculture in the mid-20th century.
Destroying desalinization plants would lead to an untold number of civilian deaths.
He’s clearly frustrated that the people didn’t rise up. They had their chance and blew it. Now the gloves are off for infrastructure targets.
Unless I have this wrong the president has issued two statements very recently which seem to be let us say different from one another.
Such is the effect of Islam.
“He’s clearly frustrated....”
That’s no excuse for threatening war crimes.
I see the usual cowardly keyword troll is at it again.
I agree, and I agree with Trump here. It was the people of Iran who put the religious whack-jobs in power 47 years ago, chanting “death to America”. If the children of those people came to their senses, and want to rejoin the sane world, Trump tried to help them.... if they don’t have the nads to take advantage of the opportunity, it’s not on Trump to protect them from the consequences of their own actions. I’ve not heard too much about all those poor citizens of Iran losing sleep over all the victims of the Islamic regime all these years. Nah, they were still chanting “death to America”.
Yup likely we could have the missile attacks stopped already if we had taken out the gas and electricity first thing. There was and is value in leaving infrastructure intact for a cooperative regime but that value is diminishing rapidly without the cooperative part.
Trump, playing 3D chess. This is just part of his negotiation tactics.
Big time.
And here’s hoping the rat party loses in November and in 2028 by a landslide.
Unfortunately.
Motivation for Asia and Europe.
Rise up without guns is a difficult and deadly proposition.
True.
