More than four out of every five dead black vultures examined by University of Georgia researchers tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to a new study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports.
The actual toll of the virus on the integral species is likely exponentially higher, though, the researchers warned.
These birds may “represent tens or hundreds of thousands of black vultures,” said Dr. Nicole Nemeth, lead author of the study and head of UGA’s Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study’s research and diagnostic service. Nemeth is also an associate professor in UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Black vultures’ indiscriminate scavenging appears to sustain transmission of the virus beyond the typical bird flu season, the study found.

So racist!
yes, those white vultures (and unicorns) have been systematically targeted so they gathered together and made a noble law.
All the Vultures must be kept EQUAL with the flu and all
So, one vulture ot it, died, and others ate him, and they got it and died; and so forth and so on.
My suggestion... Stop eating Buzzards.
I’m not worried about bird flu.
I do think we need to vaccinate people against the islamocommie flu.
People with TDS are ending up in psych wards, prisons and coffins.
About twenty years ago I remember flocks of millions of blackbirds in the woods behind our house. The noise was deafening. And I also remember columns of blackbirds flying overhead for hours at a time. The flocks would stretch from horizon to horizon.
Then avian flu happened.
The blackbird population has just recently returned to a semi-normal level.
Black Vultures are notorious in our area for killing calves. A little avian flu might not be such a bad thing.
Seems to be going round…
“Around 70 black vultures were found dead at St. Bernadette School in Pierce Township, Ohio, in early December 2025, with final laboratory results confirming the cause as H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The carcasses were discovered near school baseball fields, leading to a cleanup operation.”
Here in MO, there are ads telling farmers how to get a special license to kill black vultures, since unlike other vultures/buzzards they often attack small living animals like calves and lambs.
There was usually three dozen black buzzards hanging around my area gun club, but I only missed them after reading this. I haven’t noticed any of them for some time.
Yeah, what you said!
Seriously though, my state of Tennessee is rife with turkey vultures who do a great job eliminating the road kill. Except on the busy freeways - they're too smart to risk becoming another casualty. I'll see the same deer carcass 10 days in a row in a meridian and KNOW the troopers and highway guys have seen it.
So is someone going to demand the slaughter of all the black vultures, like they do for commercially raised birds used for food?
Idiot democrats.......
Survival of the fittest will kick in.
I guess people forget about natural selection that would produce birds resistant to the bird flu if they just let it take its course. Plus the flu would mutate into a less virulent form.
All I recall about bird flu is that someone got pink eye from it and allegedly ONE person died from it.
Watchu talkin bout, Willard?
Its funny how birds naturally segregate.
They seem smarter then humans in some ways.
