A war foretold: how the CIA and MI6 got hold of Putin’s Ukraine plans and why nobody believed them
The Guardian ^ | Fri 20 Feb 2026 | Shaun Walker

Drawing on more than 100 interviews with senior intelligence officials and other insiders in multiple countries, this exclusive account details how the US and Britain uncovered Vladimir Putin’s plans to invade, and why most of Europe – including the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy – dismissed them. As the fourth anniversary of the invasion approaches and the world enters a new period of geopolitical uncertainty, Europe’s politicians and spy services continue to draw lessons from the failures of 2022.

The phone call

William Burns had travelled halfway around the world to speak with Vladimir Putin, but in the end he had to make do with a phone call. It was November 2021, and US intelligence agencies had been picking up signals in the preceding weeks that Putin could be planning to invade Ukraine. President Joe Biden dispatched Burns, his CIA director, to warn Putin that the economic and political consequences if he did so would be disastrous.

Fifteen years earlier, when Burns was US ambassador in Moscow, Putin had been relatively accessible. The intervening years had concentrated the Russian leader’s power and deepened his paranoia. Since Covid had emerged, few had been granted face time. Putin was squirrelled away at his lavish residence on the Black Sea coast, Burns and his delegation learned, and only phone contact would be possible.

Maybe the “intelligent” community miscalculated when they taunted Russia into responding to their militarization of Ukraine.

Must be why they ignored Russia’s attempts to negotiate right before the war.

They knew the plan and wanted it to happen.

Joe Biden held direct one-on-one phone calls with Vladimir Putin on December 30, 2021, February 12, 2022, and February 21, 2022, during which he warned of severe consequences for invasion and reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and its right to choose its own alliances, including potential NATO membership.

I'm sure he did. But that doesn't mean the senile old coot didn't also make that ridiculous public statement that a "minor incursion" into Ukraine wouldn't have severe consequences.

Belligerence begats belligerence in return, but the reality is still that the Proxy war was a planned event that went exactly according to plan, until Trump shocked the world, by the planners in Europe. Once Trump was no longer the U.S. president. It had started during Obama’s presidency, was put on hold during the Trump presidency, and when the theft of the 2020 election was succesful and Biden had been installed, the plan continued on, from where they were forced to put the plan on hold. Trump was just the annoying bump in the road that they had no possible way to have countered that, since they were cofident that Shillary would be elected.

It was no ‘failure’. War is a great way to launder craptons of money.

The deep state, the corrupt politicians, big tech/fake news, the puppetmasters—they always wanted war and they still want it more than anything.

This means Zelensky, the EU, NATO an other globalists.

The next big move planned by the globalists is to do a false flag and make it look like Russia did it.

The plan is to start WWIII.

Russia amassed massive armored divisions on the border. Ukraine should have struck first. But then the war would’ve been much shorter. I’m sure the Biden admin and EU told him to refrain from a pre-emptive attack but that is what they should have done, like Israel did to Egypt in 1967. That war ended in 6 days despite being a 3 front war. And Israel didn’t have Gaza, Sinai or the West Bank as buffers.

That only confirmed to Putin that invading was the onl;y way to possibly bring about a soluttion. Neither option available to Putin was a benefit to Russia. If Putin refused to invade, then Russia loses. If Russia does invade, perhaps the solution might arise. He was in the vidse, because the invasion was by design, not by Putin, but by EU & the U.S. While Britian was no longer in the EU, they played their role as well. Because capturing Russia, would solve their econmic problems that were only worsening. especially with the flooding of Muslims, that was a majot mistake on Eurpoe's part.

They too were willing to do the replacement of British citizens for foreign citizens, but they miscalculated that plan as well.

When Biden was installed, it was time for him to open the floodgates of immigrants to replace American citizens .. They believed they had killed of Trump & the MAGA movement by doing so. The final step was to create a One World Government where the remaining populations could be enslaved for those they determined would survive, while killing off those hey determined would not survive.

It was the reset button that Putin had rejected. Which is why they turned on Putin to begin with.

Ukraine was being denied the assets to strike first.. Besides, if they had sttruck first, then the war would have been started by Ukraine, and it was imparative that Russia strike first, because that was the justification needed to build support for Ukraine.

Yes, that was part of the plan. Ukraine was told that they would have their back, but the EU really had liitle to offer in either military or monetary support. But the plan was for the U.S. to support Ukraine both monetarily and militaarily.

when that support was given by Biden, then support for Ukraine began to erode, and the longer the conflict went on the faster the erosion of that support began to increase dramatically.

One might say it was a Keystone Cops operation. In other words, it was great on paper, but reality got in the way, as it always seems to do.

You think Ukraine could have won? Also it would have give Putin justification to invade.
