This review was certainly planned differently, on the assumption that this would be a conventionally proceeding first night. But now one has to start with the ending. In the final scene, the 'fascist' has the floor - that is, the far-right politician who hasn't said a single word until now, just waited for his execution by a large group of committed anti-fascists, who have made such actions a recurring ritual for seventy years. So Tiago Rodrigues' play ends with a very long monologue in which the prisoner delivers the usual nonsense from JD Vance, AfD, and the like - that the national majority should not be tyrannised by minorities, and so on and so forth.
So just the usual crappy piece of leftwing agitprop. Big deal. Alas, it is 2026, and so the audience lacked the imaginative capacity to understand that they were attending a dramatic performance in which the stage is peopled by fictional characters whose words are being declaimed by professional actors:
And then it begins. In the audience. First, isolated whistles and boos— is it just a bit of panto fun? No. It's deadly serious. A lady theatregoer repeatedly chants 'Stop,' another throws an orange at the actor Ole Lagerpusch. Then two men rush the stage, become physical, try to drag the actor into the auditorium. It wouldn't take a lot, and they go for his throat. The performance is on the verge of being stopped, but the actor manages to hold on until his final line: 'The future belongs to us.'
The dramaturge Angela Obst hurriedly appears on stage and explains to the audience that this is not a political rally but a theatatrical performance, and that they should please not take it out on the actor Lagerpusch.
