The European Parliament has adopted a non-binding resolution setting out the European Union’s priorities for the upcoming session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, including language recognising trans women as women within the framework of EU gender equality policy.

The resolution was approved on 12 February by 340 votes in favour, 141 against and 68 abstentions.

The adopted text forms part of the European Union’s negotiating position ahead of the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, which will take place in New York next month. The Commission, established in 1946 under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, is the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to gender equality and the advancement of women.

According to the adopted document, the Parliament calls for the “full recognition of trans women as women” within the context of EU priorities on women’s rights and gender equality at the UN forum. The text also references access to services aimed at protecting women from violence, including domestic violence shelters.

The resolution is not legally binding on European Union member states. Rather, it outlines the Parliament’s recommended position for the Council of the European Union when representing the bloc internationally.
