Sanae Takaichi’s conservatives cement power in landslide Japan election win

Results mean coalition of recently installed PM has supermajority in lower house of parliament

Japan’s conservative governing coalition has dramatically strengthened its grip on power after a landslide victory in Sunday’s elections in what will be seen as an early public endorsement of the new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi.

Her Liberal Democratic party (LDP) was projected to win as many as 328 of the 465 seats in parliament’s lower house, well above the 233 it needed to regain the majority it lost in 2024. With her coalition partner, the Japan Innovation party, she now has a supermajority of two-thirds of seats, easing her legislative agenda as she can override the upper chamber, which she does not control.

A smiling Takaichi placed a red ribbon above each winner’s name on a signboard at the LDP’s headquarters as accompanying party executives applauded.

The 64-year-old, who called a snap election soon after becoming Japan’s first female prime minister last autumn, had vowed to resign if her coalition failed to secure a simple majority in the vote, which was held on a freezing day when many parts of the country were again hit by heavy snow.

She will not, however, have long to savour her party’s victory. There are concerns over her management of Japan’s public finances and her ability to defuse a bitter row with China over the future of Taiwan.

Takaichi sought to appeal to voters with a 21tn yen (£99bn) stimulus package aimed at easing the cost of living crisis, later promising to suspend the 8% consumption (sales) tax on food for two years – a 5tn-yen hit to annual revenue.

Her spending plans have rattled financial markets and caused currency volatility, prompting some commentators to question her approach given that Japan’s debt is more...

China has reawakened Japanese deep military tradition and nationalism.
This will be interesting.

It's very telling that a supposedly left-of-center newspaper immediately appeals to globalist financiers to derail the right's victory in the election.

I would think with a supermajority she can do what she wants.

Of course we could magically get a supermajority of Republicans and nothing would happen because the Republican Party is still full of stinking RINOs.

We are in a world-wide war with totalitarians (ie Marxists). What hey believe is just as incompatible with freedom, self determinism, and human fulfillment and happiness as is what ISIS believes. That’s not an exaggeration.

That said, if we are to defend Western civilization we also have to root out all of the depravity that has infiltrated our societies (e.g. just look at what depravity has become evident just from the Epstein files).

The more I live in this world, and the more I experience, the more certain I become that there is no way forward without Divine help and intervention.

This is terrible. Japan suffered another landslide and people are cheering. Inhumane.

Japan’s ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is center left similar to the old US Democrat Party. They kept losing because of continuing moving leftward and opening the borders for mass migration.

Japanese people are very smart and see through the media BS, especially the young voters. The opposition coalition has no messages. It renamed itself as Chudou which means Middle Road but also means China Way. Japanese people became unease as some parties and politicians buddy up to the CCP. Voter ID was abolished a few years ago but it’s still difficult to cheat.

Takaiichi-san moves the party rightward and starts winning hugely despite the negative media especially the foreign press If she keeps her course, the LDP will regain majority in the upper house as well in 2028. Japanese people I know understand that her policies might fail, they are just happy that she stopped the mass migration.

While Japan does need to contribute more to it’s defense, some aspects of Japan’s military tradition need to stay buried.

Yes, I was thinking of the Rape of Nanking as well as the Chinese propensity for retribution. Hence, "This will be interesting."
