Heart-pounding bodycam footage shows the moment an NYPD officer shot and wounded a mentally ill 22-year-old man who lunged at the cop with a knife inside a Queens home last week.
The Jan. 26 police shooting of schizophrenic man Jabez Chakraborty has prompted backlash from the family, and fueled a renewed push from Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his proposed Department of Community Safety to deal with mental health crises.
The clip, released by the NYPD on Tuesday, begins with a 911 call from a female relative who requested “involuntary transportation” for Chakraborty, who she said had been hurling glass against the wall.

Arm the social workers with knives?
Rule of thumb is that at or within 21 feet, the guy with the knife can plunge it or slash it before the officer with a pistol can unholster his pistol and pull the trigger.
Attention NYPD Police. DO NOT Arrest anyone darker than Johnny or Edgar Winter. It’s not worth your job or your life. Your Supervisors, Administrators, Mayors, and Governors will throw you under the bus. They will try to appease the Mobs of Feral Animals and you will be offered up as a sacrifice. If Johnny or Edgar Resist Arrest let them go! Smile and wave Goodbye. Don’t worry about the innocent civilian who might be robbed, raped, or murdered. They would be with the mob calling for your head if you used force.
Retire if you can. Quit if you can. Ride around with Radio Off and Blinders on if you have to. Those of us who support you can defend ourselves and what is ours. The Feral Animals will thin out the weak and Snowflakes eventually.

There was a report by the California Highway Patrol stating the average gun encounter was twelve feet. This according to their records.
In the movies they just shoot the knife out of the guys hand. Madmanny should try that himself to see how it goes.

I agree. With the way NYC is now, it makes no sense to be proactive. Just respond to calls for service with the bare minimum work and keep blinders on while you wait to retire or find work in a better agency.

Social workers only permitted to use calming words and fall down quietly when stabbed or shot.
21 feet is definitely less than 30 feet.
The officer told him a half dozen tons to drop the knife. Schizophrenic or not what is the officer supposed to do - let himself be stabbed?! Dont bother answering that….
"Okay buddy, put down the knife! Don't make me counsel you!"
The solution? Wizardry! Reciting the Quranic verses Ayat al-Kursi and Al-Mu’awwidhatayn to repel the djinn.
This should disarm any deranged attacker.
Lord, he’s stupid. A knife does more damage than a gun shot. Dude could have thrown the knife at them.
Has anyone dealt with social workers? They have memorized their cards. It’s like customer support from china.

Sorry I can’t untangle which of my fictional detective and cop procedural shows it was on, but the Mayor and Council demanded less aggressive police tactics. They pushed for a woman social worker to go to de-escalate a case in which a violent man was threatening to kill his wife at home. The social worker within a few minutes was grabbed and had a knife held to her throat. Real cops had to get find a way to save her.
