The Pittsburgh Steelers have found their next head coach. The team is bringing in former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers leader Mike McCarthy as their fourth head coach in nearly 60 years, working on deal with the 62-year-old, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
McCarthy was one of the biggest names in their head coaching search, sitting at the top of the list with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Los Angeles Rams DC Chris Shula. The team brought McCarthy, Flores and Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver in for in-person interviews but have made their decision and are going with McCarthy.
The Steelers will need to bring in a quarterback over the next few years and likely look at McCarthy as their best option to help develop him. For now, however, the former Packers head coach could be an easy bridge to get Aaron Rodgers back in the building as well.
“There are a lot of things that go into being a successful coach,” Team President Art Rooney II said about the team's next coach. “Number one, really, I think in my mind, is leadership and really trusting that this person can stand in front of your team day in and day out, and hold their attention and have them motivated to do what they do. So, that’s what’s most important.”

Should he trade for Mac Jones? No rookie with any salt in the draft.
WOULD RODGERS MAKE A GOOD QUARTERBACK COACH???”

Pennsylvania Ping!
Please ping me with articles of interest.
FReepmail me to be added to the list.
Rodgers is going to spend his retirement doing magic mushrooms and drum circles.
“The Steelers will need to bring in a quarterback over the next few years and likely look at McCarthy as their best option to help develop him.”
No one really believes that Rogers believes he is in for the long haul.
I thought Rodgers ran McCarthy out of Green Bay.
I cannot believe my Steelers are hiring hands down the STUPIDEST person to be a coach. All my life they’ve been an organization run right. Now... blech. Is this what it’s like to be a fan of a normal team? This sucks.
I think there are about 30 head coaches. And they just go from place to place every four or five years.
It’s like the owners cannot find anyone with any imagination.
The difference with the Steelers is that they have had three head coaches over a 55 year span. Each one has won at least one Super Bowl, all of them having winning records.
They haven’t missed. Perhaps McCarthy is a bridge HC, or perhaps the best football minds of the franchise have died or retired. Competition for solid HC jobs is hotter than ever.
McCarthy is one of the best judges of ability and potential. Suspect he has studied closely the QBs available and will pick a sleeper gold in the 3rd round.
Surprising they didn’t hire from within “the Steeler Way” but whatever. If this was to entice Rodgers back for another year, that’s a very short-sighted move.
Any success McCarthy had in Green Bay was due to Aaron Rodger’s, not his coaching acumen.
I don’t doubt that.
Round up the usual suspects. 😣
Jeff Fisher not available? Or Rex Ryan? Or even... Pete Carroll?!
In between immersion in the isolation chamber.
A remarkable record of stability and performance. That is why I find this hire so surprising.
McCarthy had a good run in GB with Rodgers but his record in Dallas is very mediocre. And at 62 he doesn't seem to fit into a long-term plan.
Risk averse and nothing succeeds like success even if that success is less than Bill Walsh-like. Reminds of an old saying about government contracts: no one ever got fired for giving a contract to IBM.
Was hoping for Shula.
This is a weird hire that seems likely to keep Steelers in the middle of the pack and not competing for Super Bowl titles.
