‘Morally acceptable’ for US troops to disobey orders, archbishop says

The Catholic archbishop for the U.S. military services said it “would be morally acceptable to disobey” orders if troops considered them against their conscience as the Trump administration intervenes in Venezuela, readies troops for a possible deployment to Minnesota and threatens to seize Greenland.

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio is the latest public figure to suggest that U.S. soldiers could disobey their orders. His comments also underscored the mounting concern being voiced by the first American pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, as well as his top cardinals in the United States, over the Trump administration’s foreign policy.

“Greenland is a territory of Denmark,” Broglio told the BBC Sunday. “It does not seem really reasonable that the United States would attack and occupy a friendly nation.”

” It would be very difficult for a soldier or a marine or a sailor to by himself disobey an order,” he said. “But strictly speaking, he or she would be, within the realm of their own conscience, it would be morally acceptable to disobey that order, but that’s perhaps putting that individual in an untenable situation — and that’s my concern.”

Broglio, an American, has since served since 2007 as head of the D.C.-based archdiocese of the U.S. military. He is the former president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and is a known conservative.

Maybe it’s morally acceptable for archbishops to fall out of helicopters.

Big Religion has gotten billions annually from US taxpayers.

Big Religion serves Deep State, not God.

If terra firma stops their fall, it is God’s will. Actually, I’d settle for taxing these freeloading reprobates like everyone else. It is time they pay their fair share.

I doubt the Archbishop will be your proxy for serving time at Ft. Leavenworth.

Pretty clearly crossed a line here, this is not a question of faith, this is speculative morality which assumes much of a hypothetical order given by a sovereign nation.

For example, what is Russia or China invaded and staked a land claim on a piece of Greenland, given the Bishops statement you now have Catholic troops who have the cover to question a lawful order of defense.

This is extremely irresponsible of the Catholic Church given how reluctant they have been to hold any abortion supporting democrat Catholic accountable.

Talk about selective morality, WOW!

What Broglio says: “within the realm of their own conscience, it would be morally acceptable to disobey that order”

What Broglio means: “If you hate Trump and don’t want him to succeed in anything he does, then you can disobey the order and you won’t end up in Purgatory. If President Newsom or Jeffries or Kamala or Crockett order you to do something, however, you better d*mned well do it, or you won’t get any indulgences from me!”

“The Catholic archbishop for the U.S. military services”

Not for long I suspect.

I wonder if espousing his opinion on this violates the USCMJ in some way.

I know the military I worked around when I was with the DoD were always very tight lipped when it came to politics.

It does have a hint of selling plenary indulgence for holding the correct political (not faith based) views.

No, it’s not.

It’s illegal, too unless the orders are illegal.

Don't forget the pope kowtowing to the Chicoms over who the bishops are. China wants their Fentanyl to keep flowing into the U.S. through Venezuela. Evidently the Vatican is saying, "Yes, master".

And just who do the troops turn to as an authority on whether an order is unlawful - a Democrat such as Chuck Shummer? CNN? the church?

And we already have a conscientious objection provision means for discharge.
