It seems Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has found a Trump administration policy he agrees with: Those darn potheads can’t be trusted with constitutional rights.
Nevada is one of 19 states joining the administration in urging the Supreme Court to uphold a federal ban on gun possession by users of cannabis products — including those users who reside in states where medical and recreational use of the drug has been legalized.
On March 2, the court will hear a case involving the federal government’s efforts to prosecute a Texas man for violating a federal statute that prohibits gun possession by users of illegal drugs. It’s a statute that has caused serious consternation for civil libertarians in states where voters have decided to decriminalize and legalize drugs such as marijuana — a substance that up until recently the federal government regarded as illicit and dangerous as heroin.
The government argues the sweeping ban should be upheld by the high court and that even occasional users of a substance that has been made legal on the state level should have their Second Amendment rights revoked.
And to be clear, the argument isn’t merely that users of marijuana should be prohibited from handling or carrying a gun while intoxicated. Such a narrow rule would, like driving while impaired, be a reasonable limit on the right to keep and bear arms. ***
And yet, Ford has nonetheless decided to join the Trump administration’s effort to use hackneyed anti-drug stereotypes as a way to strip otherwise law-abiding and nonviolent citizens of basic civil liberties.
As far as unlikely areas of bipartisan agreement are concerned, it’s pretty disappointing if that’s the best our elected officials are able to muster.

I’m not comfortable with the legalization of pot; but this is ridiculous. One may as well say that nobody who enjoys the occasional drink should be allowed to own a car.
There are millions of gun owners who smoke pot.
Millions.
I’m wondering what NRA and GOA think of this?
Could say the same for those that tilt the bottle. Gun grab....no dice.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I’m willing to bet that most potheads, if forced to choose, would abandon their guns to continue smoking weed.
“Attorney General Ford argues that legal cannabis users have no gun rights” What about the folks in the Guns & Whiskey Club?
From this, how big a step would it be to make the same rule for alcohol consumption? What are the statistics for improper use of firearms by persons drunk or high on cannabis? Shall we make a guess? Seems like somebody’s greasing a slope.
Nose of the camel, if this stands. Alcohol “users.” SSRI users (suddenly the left will notice the common factor in school shooters). Then a litany of prescriptions; and since that’s most people hey let’s toss the whole thing.
IMO Bruen applies here; this was not a restriction in common practice at the time of the founding of our Republic.
Likely.
If they can do that they can also ban guns for alcoholics and heavy drinkers. I’d trust somebody high on cannabis before I trusted a drunk with a gun.
He’ll be running for Gov next cycle. An absolute waste.
Trump is moving Marijuana to Schedule III. Legal with a prescription.
Intrust people under the influence of marijuana or alcohol with a gun more than I trust people under the influence of power.
“If they can do that they can also ban guns for alcoholics and heavy drinkers. “
No, the can’t. Alcohol is not a Controlled Substance.
This is clearly “rasiss”.
I have occasionally seen him in court. He didn’t appear to be that smart. At the time he was working for Prince and Eglet. Prince, if you recall, was killed at a deposition by attorney Joseph Houston. I had a couple of run ins with that piece of garbage.
So it goes…
Well, he is a dem so not being bright fits him.
Neither is cannabis in states where it’s legalized.
