Donald Trump has ordered his special forces commanders to draw up a plan for the invasion of Greenland - but is being resisted by senior military figures, The Mail on Sunday has learned.
Sources say that the policy 'hawks' around the US President, led by political adviser Stephen Miller, have been so emboldened by the success of the operation to capture Venezuela's leader Nicolas Maduro that they want to move quickly to seize the island before Russia or China makes a move.
British diplomats believe that Trump is also motivated by a desire to distract American voters from the performance of the US economy before the mid-term elections later this year, after which he could lose control of Congress to the Democrats.
But such a dramatic move would put him at odds with Sir Keir Starmer and would effectively lead to the collapse of Nato.
According to the sources, the President has asked the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to prepare the invasion plan, but it is being resisted by the joint chiefs of staff on the grounds that it would be illegal - and would not be supported by Congress.
One source said: 'They have tried to distract Trump by talking about less controversial measures, such as intercepting Russian 'ghost' ships - a clandestine network of hundreds of vessels operated by Moscow to evade Western sanctions - or launching a strike on Iran.'
Diplomats have war-gamed what they describe as an 'escalatory scenario' under which Trump uses force or 'political coercion' to sever Greenland's links to Denmark.
One diplomatic cable describes the 'worst-case' scenario as leading to 'the destruction of Nato from the inside'.

Please do it Mr. President.
Just No!
Buy it if they’ll sell it. Otherwise leave it alone.
He has a dream a vision let’s hope it isn’t wet or bloody...
I haven’t watched the news today, but I don’t believe it. I think Trump will try to negotiate for it.
But IF it were to be ordered, I do think that it would be an illegal invasion order that the military would likely refuse to execute. At least not unless it was first preceded by leaving NATO.
Why?!?
This is total malarkey.
Daily mail. π
“Weapons grade stupid.”
If you believe the weather apps, Greenland is about -30 across the whole island of ice. Better bring your scivies.
Security, obviously. We are at war in case you’ve forgotten. From within as well as from hostile countries. It not only chases China out, it hems in Canada which is becoming a staging ground for China and others. Greenland, Panama, Columbia and Cuba also need to fall in line. The western hemisphere needs to be secured before it’s too late. In fact, with so many enemies within...the future is unclear.
Trump has properties throughout Europe in NATO member countries. If he orders the US military to attack and occupy Greenland, he should count on those being seized by NATO, exactly the way the Russian oligarchs had their property seized at the beginning of Russia’s Ukraine invasion.
Fake news?
Why would Trump need some super duper plan to invade an island with just 57,000 people, with a US military base there already?
Throughout history, the US military has had plans to invade probably every country that existed on the planet. Having plans means nothing in itself ... heck, we’ve had plans to invade/attack Canada, Great Britain, Iceland, and many others. It wouldn’t surprise me that, buried somewhere deep in the filing system, there are plans to attack/invade Switzerland and even the Grand Duchy of Fenwick ...
This sounds like a typical Trump ludicrous opening bid in a negotiation ploy. We will see over the next few months.
Fake news.
Stupid post of the day winner?
Yup.
