Staten Island residents discuss plans to SECEDE from New York City amid outrage in deep-red borough over new socialist mayor

Residents of Staten Island have discussed renewed calls for secession from New York City after newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani visited the borough.

Mamdani, 34, was sworn in as New York's youngest mayor in more than a century on New Year's Day - its first Muslim, South Asian, and African-born leader.

He ran on a Democratic socialist platform that included raising the minimum wage to $30 by 2030, raising the city's corporate tax to 11.5 percent, city-run grocery stores, fare-free buses, and freezing rent on rent-stabilized apartments.

Citizens and lawmakers of Staten Island, a staunch Republican enclave in the otherwise very liberal Big Apple, have fiercely opposed Mamdani's campaign, even suggesting they would break away from New York City's borough system.

The borough's president, Vito Fossella, told the Daily Mail that dissatisfaction among residents intensified following Mamdani's election, citing ideological differences and concerns over citywide policies.

'Personally, and I think the vast majority of Staten Islanders, do not embrace socialism as an effective form of government,' Fossella said. 'Historically, it's proven to be destructive, economically and spiritually, and has led to a loss of freedom and even life.'

This is not the first time Staten Island voiced the possibility of seceding from the borough system.

Staten Island previously pursued independence in the early 1990s, when voters approved a nonbinding referendum by roughly 65 percent.

The RNC is MIA relinquishing control of every major US city and coastline to the Left.

Miami just elected its first Democrat mayor since 1998 and Texas is red state now purpling due to the blue-ing of Austin and Dallas.

Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan all remain purple.

This is not sustainable!

If you look at a road and rail map, Staten Island makes more sense as a part of New Jersey rather than New York (city and state). But would it be better off?

Texas is not becoming purple, Arizona is getting redder, Pennsylvania and Michigan were blue and are now purple. The only state that you mentioned trending in the wrong direction is Georgia.

I know Long Island wants to be its own state-separating from NY State.

They can TRY, but as always, socialists never relinquish power without guns.

The Atlantic seaboard south of NY, the Gulf, and the Pacific, north of California, have plenty of red coastline.

It’s almost impossible. Staten Island would need to pay for school buildings, its two police precinct buildings, every firehouse. These were all constructed and paid for by NYC taxes. It could conceivably create its own school system but until school taxes are passed and collected it would have no way of paying staff, acquiring any materials. The same goes for cops and fireman. Leadership could investigate how Nassau counties three towns split from Queens and formed a new county in 1899. Frankly while I have very close friends there I cannot see how this happens. More practical would be having Vicki Paladino’s council district secede and join Nassau county.

Having finally escaped (after 58 years), the sh*thole that NJ has become, I can say with certainty that no, it would not.

Either way it’s ridiculous to rest on “well at least the cattles graze on red” electoral logic. We can’t let every big city - every major population center be cemented blue! It’s presumptuous to think the Electoral College or Supreme Court will remain as is!

If the financial headquarters of the US moved to TX that would be great.

This has come up many times before. Also sometimes with a secession from New York State thrown in (because arguably it is geographically part of New Jersey).

Good luck to those trying to secede. Parts of Canada talked about seceding. Still wondering about that. There was talk about the East Side of the State of WA seceding. The East Side is sick and tired of the West Side calling the shots for the whole state.
