A Plain Township man was charged Thursday after allegedly stealing several items from a Walmart shopping center and trying to shoot a Canton police officer in the head.
Canton police said the officer responded around 1:45 p.m. to the Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard NE for suspected shoplifting.
The officer was inside the loss prevention office with Shane Newman, 21, and Katerina Jeffrey, 23, when police say Newman pulled out a handgun.
According to police, Newman attempted to shoot the officer but the gun did not fire.
A Walmart asset protection associate jumped onto Newman before he could try to shoot the gun again.
Newman was taken to the floor by the officer and arrested.
In the body camera video, the officer explains he didn’t shoot Newman because he didn’t want to hit the Walmart employee that was on top of him.
“The safety and security of our customers and associates is always a top priority. We’re proud of the brave action our asset protection associate took to maintain the safety of everyone in our store. We’ll continue to work with police as they investigate.”
Jessie Carpenter, Walmart Asset Protection Operations Coach Court records show the 21-year-old man is charged with attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, drug possession and having a weapon under disability.
Police say Jeffrey, of Canton, is charged with complicity to commit a robbery.
Due to a previous felony conviction, Newman was not allowed to own or have a firearm, court records show.
After Newman’s arrest, officers recovered 50 blue pills identified as Molly, according to the records.
Newman and Jeffrey appeared in Canton Municipal court Friday. Newman was issued a $1 Million bond. Jeffrey was handed a $500,000 bond.
They both are expected back in Court on December 23rd.
“This incident is a reminder of the ever-present threat of violence against police officers and the gracious provision of God’s protection. Thank you to all of you who regularly pray with me for our officers and our community.”

Saw the video yesterday. The Walmart associate should be a cop! Fast reflexes and good take down.
Thankfully, most thugs don’t bother to properly clean and maintain their firearms. Sometimes they even load it with the wrong ammo. That’s why you often hear of people being miraculously saved due to a “jammed” gun.
The shoplifters should have been cuffed when they were taken into custody.
Cuffed and, as to the one attempting to murder the officer, have the living sh*t kicked out of him ... although the cop gave it a good shot!
There’s a Christmas miracle for you. Lucky that gun didn’t fire!
Fine, upstanding citizens...pillars of the community.
Throw away the key.
THE ONLY ONES WINNING THIS BATTLE ARE THE TATTOO SHOPS.....

Absolutely he should be recruited into a good police force or federal law enforcement agency. But perhaps a clean-cut white kid wouldn’t fit the current priorities.
The lovely Ms. Jeffrey looks like she could be the spawn of Gretchen Whitmer. Just sayin . . .
Cleveland.

Security guard?
America’s liberal future.
America’s liberal future.
Her parents are so proud of her choice ina boyfriend. NOT!
Many semiauto handguns will go “click” with no rounds in the chamber - which is likely what happened there. Maybe he racked the slide and then put the mag in, so nothing in the chute.
A moron either way.
I don’t think the gun even had one in the chamber. But he was trying to load one in the chamber when he was tackled.
He should have been searched thoroughly.
