An alleged gunman remains on the loose after “multiple” people were shot and at least two were killed on the campus of Brown University, police said.
The Rhode Island Ivy League school sent out a first alert to students on campus shortly after 4:20 p.m. of an active shooter near the Barus & Holley Engineering school building.
At least two people have been killed, a law enforcement source said.
Providence police confirmed multiple people have been shot.
“Multiple shot in the area of Brown University. This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice,” the PD said on X.
Unconfirmed reports of up to 20 casualties, according to police scanner audio shared on social media.
The unversity sent out a second emergency alert just before 5 p.m. claiming a suspect has been arrrested before retracting that statement minutes later.
“One suspect in custody. Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice,” the university wrote.
“Continue to shelter in place. Remain away from Barus & Holley area. Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s),” the retraction added.
“It was honestly quite terrifying,” student Katie Sun, who was studying in the Engineering Research Center lobby when she heard gunshots around 4:10pm, told the The Brown Daily Herald, the school’s newspaper. “The shots seemed like they were coming from … where the classrooms are.”
Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.
Several buildings across campus have been put on lockdown.
Sun said she evacuated the building, leaving behind her belongings, and ran to her dorm.
Video footage obtained by the student paper showed police officers assisting several victims on the ground near the Sciences Library.

Amish or Jihadi is my guess.
It took place in the engineering section.
"It took place in the engineering section."
I wonder if one of the dead is the shooter, most campus shooters kill themselves on campus they dont run off..maybe this was some lovers spat, murder suicide, but others got caught in the cross fire
Really unusual that the police say ONE gunman suspect is in custody.
They always say “The gunman acted alone.” “There is no connection to terrorism.” Description of suspect: “A man.”
Sometimes: “A man who wore a hoodie and sneakers.”
“Had no postings of any sort on any social media all his life.”
So do they think more than one was involved? Or just being cautious to protect people in danger.
Shooter is not down but in custody. The gun itself is still out there somewhere.
Brown University, eh?
I take that back...Suspect is still out there?
I’m with you on that guess. Wasn’t there a tightly wrapped possible Chinese spy who went postal about 15 years ago? Will go check…
That was an early report that they corrected to not having anyone in custody.
I’m remembering way back to ‘93. Grok:
“Yes, Yes, there have been college campus shootings in the United States perpetrated by male Chinese nationals (international students or immigrants from mainland China).
The documented cases are:
• November 1, 1991 – University of Iowa shooting: Gang Lu, a 28-year-old Chinese graduate student in physics (born in China, immigrated for studies), killed 5 people (including faculty and a fellow student) and injured 1 on campus before committing suicide. He used a .38 revolver, motivated by grievances over not winning a dissertation prize.
• August 28, 2023 – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shooting: Tailei Qi, a 34-year-old Chinese graduate student (international student from Henan Province, China), fatally shot his faculty advisor, associate professor Zijie Yan, in a campus lab. Qi was arrested and charged with first-degree murder; no other victims were reported shot, though the incident triggered a campus lockdown.
These are the primary incidents matching the criteria, drawn from historical records and reports. Other high-profile campus shootings (e.g., Virginia Tech 2007 by Seung-Hui Cho) involved perpetrators of Korean origin, not Chinese nationals. No additional large-scale cases by male Chinese nationals appear in comprehensive databases or lists of U.S. school/college shootings.
Gee, and I trusted the news media. Now that trust has been shattered. 😞
I do believe it was the “officials” who erred. Now you can’t trust officials either.
Never could.
Well, at least we have FR.
Lone wolf. Woof, woof!!🐺
There seems to be a pack of lone wolves these days.
