Rise of the Mamdani Clones
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Dec. 11, 2025 5:36 pm ET | Kimberley A. Strassel

After the 2024 humiliation, the left is back. It could hurt the party in 2026.

Kim Strassel speaks with law professor Jonathan Turley about why the charges were dismissed against James Comey and Letitia James and how Donald Trump is separately using the legal system to the executive branch’s benefit.

What could get in the way of a coming 2026 Democratic wave, given history and the current public mood? Nothing but the Democratic Party itself, which is sitting placidly by as the progressives who lost them last year’s election mobilize to take over even more of the party. Bernie Sanders may never be president, but he’s a kingmaker.

At least 20 Democratic representatives and four senators are on the casualty list, retiring to make their seats available to progressive challengers rather than be beaten by them. The left, fueled by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s New York City victory, are moving against those who remain, challenging dozens of incumbents from New York to California. The national party organizations have lost control, as progressive super PACs pour money into the fight, guided by Mr. Sanders, who is endorsing widely and early and stockpiling his own cash for his chosen candidates.

The left’s top focus is on purifying current Democratic seats, replacing less-extreme incumbents with Mamdani-like democratic socialists. A case in point: Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller, raised his profile during his run in the recent mayoral race by getting arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He didn’t win, but did forge a ranked-choice voting alliance with Mr. Mamdani and earned Mr. Sanders’s approval.

With endorsements from Messrs. Mamdani and Sanders in his pocket, Mr. Lander this week announced his plan to challenge Rep. Dan Goldman, on grounds the incumbent is a political wimp. This is the same Dan Goldman who, as...

The democrats are going full Communist, and this is not good. If they take power again, they have told us what they will do and its not pretty.

Never underestimate the public’s ability to ignore clear warning signs and vote in these fools who will then kill them.

Comey's case was quashed because he is the weak link in the Crossfire Hurricane fraudulent intelligence scandal that leads directly to Obama. His trial would have put all the evidence on the record. If convicted, he would have faced pressure to accept immunity to turn state's evidence against the others.

This article is a little confused.

The progressives did not just sit idly by while the socialists tried and successfully took over NYC’s mayoral mansion. They brought in Cuomo, they brought in several other people for strategy and other positions.

There was a lot of infighting from the usual suspects in the NYC race and ultimately, the progressives lost in the face of BernieSanderism. This party wants to remain tied to progressive ideology. It does not want to go with socialist ideology.

The handling of Comey’s case was an embarrassment and disgrace to the DOJ in my opinion. The dems run circles around the Rs every time.

It's more complicated than that. The Lyndsey Halligan and Alina Habba situations are representative of a nefarious scheme going on.

Consider this: The Democrats have been blocking President Trump's appointments just like they did in 2017 (and even like they did to Bush in 2000 until 9/11 happened). Here we are in December and he still doesn't have his administration fully filled out. The reason that President Trump has to appoint "interim" or "acting" prosecutors is that the Democrats are purposely stalling the confirmation of the permanent positions. They want to keep the seat vacant so that the judges can use the vacancies to void prosecutions whenver an "acting" prosecutor's term expires.

The Democrats have created a vicious circle: Block permanent appointment -> President appoints "interim"(120 day) officeholder -> temporary term expires -> Trump appoints a new "acting" officeholder (210 day term) -> acting term expires -> Trump does what??? The courts are now rejecting future appointments, resulting in the prosecutor being vacant and the court now gets to choose the prosecutor it wants!

This is becoming judicial tyranny on the grounds laid down by the Democrats by creating permanent vacancies that can never be filled. This gives the District Court judges, who are already hostile to Donald Trump, the legal cover they need to keep making these rulings. The court is showing no interest in considering deference to the Executive who must keep his Department of Justice operating when the Senate is obstructing his confirmations.

The Senate blocks the President, the clock runs out, and the Court legally "usurps" the appointment power. By doing this, they are making it impossible to prosecute anyone in a blue state.
