Lawyers representing the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk argued Thursday during his first in-person court appearance that cameras not be used during his trial, despite Erika Kirk insisting all hearings be broadcast for transparency.
Tyler Robinson, 22, was brought into the Provo courtroom wearing a simple blue button down and argyl tie as his lawyers prepared to argue that media shouldn’t be allowed to film his hearings by claiming they could potentially taint a jury.
Judge Tony Graf allowed cameras to film for part of Thursday’s proceedings, but more than two hours of the hearing was carried on behind closed doors.
Robinson’s mother, father and brother were originally in the gallery but barred from the secret hearing, despite his lawyers’ request that the kin be allowed to stay.
Robinson looked calm behind the defendant’s table flanked by his attorneys, and even smiled as he appeared to whisper joking comments to one before the hearing began.
His father, mother and brother all joined him in the courtroom for the hearing.
When the hearing was reopened to the public, Robinson’s lawyer, Staci Visser, groused to the judge that the media had “violated” his broadcasting order by showing Robinson in shackles and by including audio from the defense table before the hearing began.
“We believe this threatened my client’s right to a fair trial,” Visser said of the alleged violation. Visser asked that the cameras be kicked out for the rest of the day.
“It’s our understanding that the shackles are visible and some audio from the counsel table was heard,” Visser said.
“There has been some filming of computers and materials at counsel’s desk … That’s entirely inappropriate,” she said, complaining that she was still getting “notes” that the shackles were visible. The camera was focused only on the...

Why is he shackled at all? He’s a standard issue soy boy. They think he’s some sort of ninja commando that can take on the courtroom? A couple of deputies, Marshals or prison chasers should be able to easily handle him if he gets out of control.
