Trump Announces Pardon for Honduran Ex-President Convicted in Drug Case

Juan Orlando Hernández was accused of receiving millions in bribes and partnering with cocaine traffickers. He was convicted in Manhattan in 2024 and sentenced to 45 years in prison.

President Trump announced on Friday afternoon that he would grant “a Full and Complete Pardon” to a former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, who, as the center of a sweeping drug case, was found guilty by an American jury last year of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States.

The news came as a shock not only to Hondurans, but also to the authorities in the United States who had built a major case and won a conviction against Mr. Hernández. They had accused him of taking bribes during his campaign from Joaquin Guzman, the notorious former leader of the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico known as “El Chapo,” and of running his Central American country like a narco state.

The judge in his case, P. Kevin Castel, had called Mr. Hernández “a two-faced politician hungry for power” who masqueraded as an antidrug crusader while partnering with traffickers. And prosecutors had asked the judge to make sure Mr. Hernández would die behind bars, citing his abuse of power, connections to violent traffickers and “the unfathomable destruction” caused by cocaine.

The prosecution stretched across Mr. Trump’s first term and concluded during Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s time as president. In the end, Mr. Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in prison in Federal District Court in Manhattan, capping what prosecutors had presented as a sprawling conspiracy.

A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, where Mr. Hernández was tried, declined to comment. A Drug Enforcement Administration agent, who worked on the investigation into Mr. Hernández and spoke anonymously...

RE: Millions of dollars....

Up to Trump it would have been “send my 10% to my numbered account and your pardon will be signed by the autopen.”

Bodyguard to Maduro in the palace: Boss, come over here. Look at the TV news. This guy got a pardon. Looks healthy. Smiling.

Remember, our justice system is corrupt.

Many innocent people are convicted because they don’t go along with the global criminal syndicate. It could very well be that Juan Orlando Hernández either knew too much or was going to turn somebody in.

Re: "Juan Orlando Hernández"

This is the first time I have seen this man's name and heard about the trial.

What is the New York Times NOT telling me that I need to know?

Well, it's clear that President Trump would do this because...um...well, you see...because...

Blowing up drug running boats and pardoning a known and convicted major drug runner doesn’t make any sense.

Assuming Hernández was involved with any type of trafficking, it must have been trivial amounts of cocaine, probably less than what one of those drug boats hold.

On one hand, Trump is blowing up alleged drug dealers on boats and threatening military action against Venezuela because of its role in drug trafficking. On the other hand, Trump is pardoning a convicted drug trafficker. To further underscore the insanity of this situation, the pardoned drug trafficker’s brother and co-conspirator was arrested and prosecuted by…wait for it…. Trump’s FBI and DOJ during Trump’s first term as president.

He is an anti-communist who stood in the way of Obama’s installation of a communist against the will of the Honduran Supreme Court, which was trying to protect Honduras’ term limits law.

He also moved the Honduran embassy to Jerusalem ...

And, he also reconstituted prayer in schools.

Garland and [the admitted communist] Comey’s people went after him using lawfare.

President Trump:

Additionally, I will be granting a Full and Complete Pardon to Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez who has been, according to many people that I greatly respect, treated very harshly and unfairly.

This cannot be allowed to happen, especially now, after Tito Asfura wins the Election, when Honduras will be on its way to Great Political and Financial Success.

Free Republic is completely infected with Hard Left Banditos who pretend they have doubts about Trump and USA Conservatives.

The first eleven comments - except mine - did not even notice that the accused was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to 45 years, by a New York City federal court.

The first eleven comments - excluding mine - were not even slightly concerned that the entire narrative was written by the Hard Left New York Times.

I’m with you. When Trump does something I don’t understand, I tend to think there’s a lot I don’t know, and he has his reasons. I voted for him, now I’m going to let him do his thing, while I get on with my own life.

There has to be a back story - maybe he was prosecuted to protect some dem “lawmakers” - or maybe he had info to use against Maduro and a lot of others...where a pardon keeps rumors about what he may be talking about down instead of using a plea deal.

Well, I, as someone who has been unemployed over a year now…
…and sees Trump pal around with the Tech Bros and completely misrepresent what H-1B and other visas have been used for…
…I am now completely off the Trump Train, and am willing to blast him for hypocritical actions, of which he makes many.

Is this action a backstab of his base? Not sure. It does come from the evil New York Times, and maybe this guy ALSO did some good in addition to ruining US lives thru drug dealing. But hey, as an American, I tend to prioritize harm to my country over good things done in other countries.

But I’m sure of this: I will NEVER reflexively defend Trump ever again.
