West Virginia Sen. Jim Justice agrees to pay more than $5 million in unpaid taxes

Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.V., and his wife have agreed to pay more than $5 million to the IRS in previously unpaid federal income taxes dating back to 2009, according to court records filed Monday.

The West Virginia senator committed to paying that hefty sum just hours after the Justice Department sued him and his wife, Cathy Justice, on behalf of IRS tax collectors, who said they had repeatedly attempted to recover the unpaid taxes, but to no avail, according to a complaint filed earlier on Monday.

“Despite notice and demand for payment of the assessments,” the suit read, “[Justice] and Cathy L. Justice have neglected or refused to make full payment of those assessments to the United States.”

Justice will be on the hook for $5,164,739.75, “plus statutory interest and other additions to tax accruing thereafter,” according to the settlement agreement, which still requires a judge’s approval.

A spokesperson for Justice declined to comment. His attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is only the latest tax issue Justice has recently encountered. Last month, West Virginia state tax collectors reportedly placed a $1.36 million lien on the swanky Greenbrier Hotel, which is owned and operated by the Justice family.

If I owed the IRS $100 they wouldn’t give me years to fiddle around. They’d seize my bank accounts, savings accounts, retirement account, house, cars and anything else they can think of. Then put me in jail. How does one get to asshat around for years owing them $5 million?

IRS collections is generally not this kind and gentle. They usually very quickly freeze bank accounts and seize assets.
Smacks somewhat of special treatment.

Some years ago the Clinton Foundation was discovered to have cheated the IRS about of a huge amount of taxes. I want to say $50M, but I could be inflating.

And since, you know, the Foundation had, uhhhhhhh, made some, you know, errors in the filing, they, of course, were allowed to re-file and, sort of, correct the errors. Once the forms were fixed and checked, and an agreement was reached, well, as expected, everyone was satisfied. Money was transferred. No big deal.

It’s good to be king.

It’s tough being a Sen.

Shouldn’t he be in prison?

Any of us sure would be if we ‘oh, gee ... overlooked paying $5M in taxes’.

Must be nice being a senator. They’d probably throw the average person in prison for jerking them around for that long.

We needed the seat bad enough to go with the sure winner, a former democrat. He can keep the seat warm for a real conservative when he’s 80(or 100).

No,Justice operates under the principles of his money is his money, your money is his money, and never pay until you are sued.

He has a long history of stiffing business vendors, union health insurance, OHSA fines, business loans, etc. That is how he rolls. Still he is a reliable vote for Trump's agenda in the US Senate. He may be a deadbeat but he is our deadbeat 🤔.
