'You have a right to defend yourself': 7-Eleven clerk fired after shooting attacker

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. (KOKH) — Stephanie Dilyard, a former 7-Eleven clerk, faced a terrifying ordeal when a man attempted to strangle her after she refused to accept a counterfeit $100 bill for purchases.

The incident occurred just before midnight on Thursday.

Dilyard recounted, "He threatened me, and said he was gonna slice my head off, and that's when I tried to call the police. He started throwing things at me, came behind the counter. I tried to run off, but he grabbed his hands around my neck, and pushed me out of the counter space, and that's when I pulled out my gun and I shot him."

The suspect, identified as 59-year-old Kenneth Thompson, fled to MacArthur Blvd. and Northwest 34th St. and called 911.

Police confirmed that Dilyard is protected under Oklahoma's self-defense law.

However, she was terminated by 7-Eleven on Monday for using her own gun. "They said that they were going to separate from employment because of a violation of policy," Dilyard said.

Dilyard, who had been working alone from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. for over two years, still bore a scratch on her neck and burns on her finger from firing the pistol.

Reflecting on the incident, she stated, "This was a situation where I felt like I was put into a corner between choosing between my job, and my life, and I'm always going to choose my life because there's people that depend on me. Just, I'm going, I'm going home, you know. I need to be here for my kids."

Thompson was arrested at the hospital and charged with assault and battery, threatening acts of violence, attempting to pass a fake bill, and a felony warrant for violating parole.

Dilyard hopes her experience serves as a wake-up call to prevent other clerks, especially women, from being harmed. "If I've known that there's a potential that somebody is for real on taking my life away that I will do whatever it takes, and I hope that women see that, and they'll do the same thing. You have a right to defend yourself," she said.

Attempts to reach 7-Eleven for a statement on Dilyard's firing and any changes to employee policy were unsuccessful.

Dilyard started a GoFundMe to help raise money to support her family while she recovers and looks for another job.

Re “… They said that they were going to separate from employment because of a violation of policy,” Dilyard said.”

You’re alive. You can find another job.

Meanwhile, sue them for penn they’re worth for putting your life in danger.

You are your own first responder. The company doesn’t care whether you live or die.

Yup. She oughta get a month off, with pay. What does 7-11 offer as survivor’s benefits if an employee is killed by sone nutter while working an overnight shift. Zilch, I’ll bet.

She should track down the president of 7-11, and "even up" the score.

No one should be working night shift at a shop-and-rob alone. In my misspent youth I worked at such a place one summer, but we closed at 11. I closed most nights, but a woman closed when I didn’t. She was robbed 3 times during that summer, I was never robbed. But then I was diligent about keeping no more than $20 in the register. She wasn’t.

Find that man or woman and put them to work... that is the kind of employee I want. Give me 20 of them and we will rebuild society.

From the article: ...attempted to strangle her after she refused to accept a counterfeit $100 bill for purchases.

Korporate management of 7-ll just sent a clear message to all 7-11 clerks around the world; Accept any and all counterfeit bills.

7-11 wants everyone to know that their policy is for every clerk to be unarmed and ripe to be robbed. I’ve gotta think that it’s a stupid wokey democrat that set that policy.

Indians (curry type) are big into gun control. They also don’t keep things clean.

Call it racists, I don’t give a damn. I worry about hygiene eating in an Indian (dot, not feather) establishment. It’s a cultural thing. They just don’t care about the trash on the floor, on the street, etc. The bathrooms are USUALLY disgusting.

Besides, 7-11 can have really low grade fuel. They are NOT a top tier supplied gas station and use many different suppliers. Top tier: https://www.toptiergas.com/

This is just one more reason why to stay away from 711.

>>if an employee is killed

I have noted over the years that if a employee is killed at a 7-11, that store is closed and the building sold off.

I would guess that 7-11 found it difficult to replace a dead employee when the new hire found out the circumstance.

She just saved 7-11 a lot of money from having to close down that store by not being killed.

I worked overnights at one of these places, not for long, too many shady people. What did I do? Went back to Domino's, where I got to deal with even MORE shady people.

A couple of months after I left that convience store (Hi, I'd like to buy some convenience, please...) a girl got killed there.

What did the Pakistanis who owned the place do? Installed some "bullet-proof" glass.

I worked the night shift in a 7/11 during the summer right after I graduated from college. I was there by myself all evening until 11:00 PM when the owner would come by to help me close up. He said if robbers ever showed up I should help them carry everything to their car. Fortunately nothing bad ever happened.

Me too, the Shop-Qwik. Owner said I could eat all the revolving Polish sausages I wanted.
Was happy to quit that job, night shift.

She should’ve become a member of the https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/

They defend members who have been involved in such a situation. I’m glad she’s ok. You would think that at such close range she would’ve killed him.
