A Danville public school teacher is on leave following a controversial social media post that has sparked significant backlash. Dr. Sabrina Kent Morris, a history and government teacher at George Washington High School, reposted an image on Instagram from @Dream.foramerica that depicted a rainbow-colored gun pointing at the back of a man's head with the caption, "Put the pronouns back in the email." The image was blurred due to its violent nature.
The controversy gained traction after a right-leaning social media account, @LibsofTikTok, highlighted the post on X, leading to coverage by "The Gutfeld Program" on Fox News.
Danville residents expressed concern over the post, particularly given Morris's role as an educator. One resident remarked, "Anything with a gun back to the head is appalling." Jarvis Tucker, a George Washington High School alum, added, "You got to be able to set a better example."
Danville Public Schools responded by stating, "Upon learning of the post, DPS immediately began reviewing the situation in accordance with division policy and procedures. We have also been in contact with the Danville Police Department. The employee involved will not be present on school grounds while this matter is under investigation."
Former U.S. Attorney John Fishwick commented on the broader implications of social media activity, saying, "I think people need to be cognizant of the fact that anything you post on social media is out there for the world to see. If it somehow impacts your job, most important employers are going to say that's fair game for us to look at and decide if you're harming our business or if you are harming our brand."
A spokesperson for the school district clarified that adding pronouns to emails has never been a requirement for teachers or students. Morris's Instagram account has since been made private, and attempts to reach her for comment were unsuccessful.
