Elon Musk became the first person ever to achieve a net worth of more than $500bn (£370.9bn) in October
Tesla boss Elon Musk has been one of the world's richest people for several years now, and that wealth recently went stratospheric when he became the first half-trillionaire.
Despite this, Musk has insisted he leads a largely unglamorous lifestyle. He said in 2021 that he lived in a Texas home valued at $50,000 (£38,000).
His former partner Grimes, with whom he has two children, told Vanity Fair in 2022 that he does not live the extravagant life of excess luxury many assume.
"Bro does not live like a billionaire. Bro lives at times below the poverty line," she told the magazine. Once, she said, he refused to buy a new mattress, despite her side having a hole in it.
While his day-to-day living quarters may not be as lavish as one might expect, he is known to have a love of unique cars, including one that can morph into a submarine. He also has a private jet collection, worth many millions of dollars.
And then there was that small splurge back in 2022, when he bought Twitter for a casual $44bn.
The luxury mansions - that he sold
Musk once had an impressive real-estate portfolio. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2019 that he had spent $100m on seven houses in about seven years - most of them a stone's throw from each other in the prestigious neighbourhood of Bel-Air, California.
Collectively, the properties boasted swimming pools, a tennis court, wine cellar, private library and a ballroom. One was a ranch house once owned by legendary Willy Wonka actor Gene Wilder.
But in 2020, Musk had a change of heart - tweeting that he would be "selling almost..." and "will own no house".

Weil, isn’t he paying child support on like 973 kids??
He stuffs it in a mattress so it can’t be used to invest grow the economy. /S
Prayers for Elon Musk.
What does Bill Gates do with all his money?
Now do George Soros.
Nobody’s business but his own................
Why should anyone care, it’s his money.
I am so tired of all the wealth and class envy the media promotes.
Most of that money is tied up in investments, which is where his $500,000,000,000 net worth comes from.
He has no money.
He gave it all away to charity. 🤡
He doesnt share it with me. That much I know.
I love how the beeb smuggles in NY Times drivel which was just a hit piece about his charitable giving. It seems they didn’t approve of the charities he gave to....as if he owed it to the NY Times to get a permission slip from them or something.
Nothing Good recently.
From what I’ve seen he turns around and plows it back into his existing businesses, or starts another.

We could use a hundred thousand more like Elon Musk.
Exactly. People on the left never seem to understand that that is not cash money..
If someone like musk were to have to liquidate immediately, he could in fact, bring the entire stock market down theoretically. By the time it was over and done, he would have a fraction of the amount of money that he was once worth.
I recall about at least two years ago maybe three he paid $15 billion in federal taxes and to the left that was still not enough.
If we were to instigate some of the tax rules that the left waltz particularly on unrealized capital gains on a year to year basis, the market could not absorb all of the sell off that would be needed to pay those taxes and in return the net worth of those people would drop in some cases dramatically. so that from that point on the amount of money that the government would take in would be a steadily accelerating downturn.
Fund a mission to mars.
Left PayPal -> $300M
Started Tesla -> $70M total investment
Started SpaceX -> $100M initial investment
Started Boring Co -> $100M initial investment
Started Neuralink -> $100M initial investment (much later, 2016)
Pure Capitalism: start company/build company/go pub/cash out/start new one(s)
If the Commutards don’t figure out that’s what works, there’s no help for them

Not necessarily. Because in order for him to liquidate, he would merely be selling his assets. Not destroying them. The buyer(s) would then have that wealth. The capital doesn’t just disappear into thin air. It just changes hands.
I guess who (and where) the buyer(s) is could hurt economically in some places depending on those details
