The race for New York City mayor has tightened considerably — with ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo cutting front-runner Zohran Mamdani’s lead in half from a month ago, according to a new poll.
Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, now leads Cuomo, running as an independent, just 44% to 34% among the likely Big Apple voters, the Suffolk University survey found.
Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa is in third place with 11% support.
But Mamdani had a 20-point lead over Cuomo in Suffolk University’s prior poll conducted in September.
It’s Suffolk’s first survey since Mayor Eric Adams completely dropped his re-election bid and endorsed Cuomo.
Cuomo is now running roughly even among Hispanics after trailing Mamdani by 30 points in that demographic in the September poll.
He leads among independents by 10 points, a dramatic flip from a month ago, when he trailed Mamdani by 18 points among non-party-affiliated voters.
Seven percent of voters are still undecided and the four other candidates whose names are on the ballot garner 2% support combined.
Sliwa remains a factor in the race. He and Cuomo are splitting the anti-Mamdani vote, making it harder to defeat the democratic socialist Queens assemblyman.
Many of Sliwa’s voters would back Cuomo if the red-beret clad Guardian Angels founder were not in the race, the poll found.
“There is one person in New York City whose voters could have an outsized impact on the outcome,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center.
“That person isn’t Mayor Eric Adams, Representative Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Chuck Schumer, or any New York billionaire. It’s Republican Curtis Sliwa, whose voters hold the 11% blocking Cuomo from winning the race,” he said.

Sliwa is nuts.
This isn’t caring about NYC; it’s aiding the destruction of it.
It’s a tough situation...
On the GOP side, is it better if ZM wins and we can use him ammo in the midterms? I’d say so, but I also say that as someone who doesn’t have any skin in the game in NYC Cuomo is detestable scum, but electing ZM is NYC committing suicide. If I had to live or work in NYC, I’d be forced to hold my nose and vote Cuomo.

I can’t imagine any Sliwa supporters voting for Mamdani. I suspect they’d vote for Cuomo, or maybe stay home.
Cuomo is trash. But Mamdani is a radical Muslim socialist. That’s ten times worse. Mamdani will probably win. And Sliwa will play a big part in that.

The GOP has prepped us well for this moment by forcing us to learn this procedure over the years with GHW Bush, Dole, GW Bush, McCain, Romney...
Cuomo is a murdering sexual harasser.
He lost the primary to Zooboy.
His ego is going to destroy NYC. So sure, attack Curtis!
Yes, I think it’s his ego.
Look at London. Sadiq Khan is still the Mayor of London.
And it took the Spaniards nearly 800 years to recapture Spain.
So he closed a 20 point landslide to a 10 point landslide.
His ego has blinded him, it’s more important to him than the city he claims to love; and, yes, that suggests Nuts to me.

Cuomo in a nutshell
Nobody who is voting for Swila is going to suddenly vote for Cuomo. The guy's not fit to be mayor, but neither are the other two.
I would love Swila to drop out, just to prove how wrong the pearl clutchers are.
The fault is all on the NYC voter, nobody else. They chose the korommunist over the murderer, Cuomo, and they will again, with our without the big dumb lug in the beret.
If Cuomo were smart he’d offer Sliwa Head of the NYC Police
The poll in the article found otherwise. It indicates that many of them would vote for Cuomo if Sliwa dropped out.
You think Sliwa would take the offer?
Never defend a wife from her beating husband. She’ll turn on you just like people turn on Sliwa. NYC wants the beating.
This is all an elaborate ruse to install the “Cockroach Who Would Be King”, anyway. Never mind that he killed New Yorkers and hoarded ventilators.
I like what Sliwa is doing. Besides, he can’t quit if NYC is to be saved, in the end. Somehow, a better city elected Rudy Giuliani.
Are the NYC voters toddlers? They could use their brains and vote for the equal evil (Cuomo) regardless of Swila.
Again. And again. This is ALL on the voters of NYC. They, alone, are the reason that the choices are a well meaning lummox, a koranimal-commie, and a murderer-commie. The voters chose this. They still have agency.
