Senate Republicans considering bill to keep SNAP benefits flowing amid the shutdown

Senate Republicans are discussing voting on a bill that would prevent millions of low-income Americans from losing access to food aid on Nov. 1.

The bill from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) would fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for the duration of the shutdown, which on Wednesday entered its 22nd day. The Department of Agriculture warned earlier this month that if the government shutdown dragged on “there will be insufficient funds to pay full November SNAP benefits for approximately 42 million individuals across the Nation.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in a brief interview that senators were discussing “some options,” though nothing had been scheduled yet. With the Senate set to leave town on Thursday, and the legislation not yet teed up, the earliest it could get a vote is the middle of next week absent an agreement with Democrats.

Hawley, in a separate interview, confirmed there had been discussion about potentially bringing up his bill for a vote.

“If they don’t give it a vote then I’m going to take it to the floor and try to UC it or UC a vote agreement,” Hawley said, referring to seeking unanimous consent, or buy-in from all of his 99 colleagues, to either pass or vote on the bill.

Republicans have been warning about the SNAP cliff as a critical looming pain point of the government shutdown.

Republicans held off bringing up bills on specific programs or departments for the first phase of the shutdown. But as the funding lapse has dragged on, they’ve tried to increase political pressure on Democrats to test their resolve to oppose funding.

They previously brought up a Defense funding bill, which Democrats blocked last week. And they will vote Thursday on legislation from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.)...

…the first order of business will be to swear in Arizona Democrat Representative Adelita Grijalva, who already declared that she would immediately file a discharge motion to force the Epstein files out of committee for a full floor vote.

I understand Johnson is holding up her swearing in for some form of leverage, but that discharge motion is going to be filed - sooner or later.

Broken record....if there welas dirt on trump or ant republican of significance, it would have been put out during obama admin...were it so, would have been easier and more effective than russiagate. Of course if deep state people in fbi have since changed info, or victims are willing to embellish on a list that they have (because no one can call them liars) then that explains the unprecedented urgency. Transprent.

Need to use this as a immediate local basis for recall petitions. You want SNAP turned back on? Sign this petition to recall idiot that wont let you have it. Desrving poor and single moms plus republicants ought to be enough to recall 3 to 5 senators. The excercise will slap them awake.

73% of SNAP households have household income below the Federal Poverty Level.

Usual emotional responses posted here aside, that's a good analytical breakdown of SNAP use. I came up with just over 9% of the population are on the program while over 12% are said to be under the poverty line.

If that's true then SNAP is better managed than I thought it was and we shouldn't be so hasty to break out the torches and pitchforks over it. The blatant abusers of the program (welfare queens, illegals, etc.) make it appear that it's just a trough for scammers, but most recipients are not represented by those criminals.

The volunteer food banks have been overwhelmed since the last years of the Biden regime. The economy IS recovering - just not fast enough for a society grown too used to instant gratification.

Newscum’s got the California National Guard handing out food at food banks. They should be helping ICE round up illegals. I’m sure the food they’re handing out will be going to illegals who shouldn’t be getting it.

True, but I don't think it's for leverage.

From what I read, Johnson is taking a hard line because he sees the discharge motion as an attack on his authority and ability to set and control the agenda.

The problem for Johnson is that, despite Grijalva, there are enough Republicans who are willing to side with the Democrats on this.

42,000,000 people in the United States have SNAP benefits? 1 out of 8? Ridiculous.

Tue disgrace is that there are 42 million Americans, mostly women, using the SNAP program.

Excellent point. I guarantee that the rate of morbid obesity among the SNAP crowd is off the charts. A little fasting would be good for those folks. But let’s be honest - even if SNAP’s shut down for a while, none of the recipients will go hungry. Food banks, churches, donations, etc.

If it’s the “Schumer Shutdown”, why would anyone advocate softening the effect? Let the Ghettopotomai lose a few pounds, by cutting off their grape soda and Cheetos.
I have yet to see any photos of malnourished children sitting along the curbs in Chicago.

I don’t think there will be food riots, exactly...but I do think there will be massive shop lifting and theft of people in parking lots. There is a lot of feral braggadocio on Youtube about it.

42 million folks is a lot of dependents. An absurd amount. And a lot of these folks treat EBT and a birthright, not aid. It is really time to tighten the rules and cull folks who could work but don’t.
Now is a perfect opportunity.
