Our Next Debate: Would America Be Safer Without the Second Amendment? (Alan Dershowitz vs Dana Loesch)
The Free Press ^ | October 8, 2025 | Isaac Grafstein

Posted on 10/08/2025 6:47:16 PM PDT by DoodleBob

… In this country, guns are symbols of freedom. The right to bear arms is enshrined in the Second Amendment of the Constitution. For many, this right is more than historical; it is existential. It guarantees self-defense, deters tyranny, preserves sovereignty over government, and empowers citizens to resist oppression. This is why the U.S. has an estimated 120 firearms for every 100 people—meaning there are more guns than people in this country.

The tension between freedom and safety sits at the heart of our next live debate, which we’re putting on with support from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). On November 5 in Chicago, we will ask: Would America be safer without the Second Amendment?

And we could not have found two more formidable voices to face off. Dana Loesch, a former National Rifle Association spokeswoman and host of The Dana Show, has been one of the movement’s most visible champions. Her 2014 bestseller, Hands Off My Gun: Defeating the Plot to Disarm America, made her a household name and one of the most prominent gun-rights advocates in the country.

On the other side is Alan Dershowitz, one of America’s foremost lawyers as well as a constitutional scholar and passionate advocate for gun control. To Dershowitz, the Second Amendment is “absurd”—a relic that, if he could rewrite the Constitution, he would eliminate altogether.

Free Press founder Bari Weiss will moderate the debate. It will dig into whether the right to bear arms today is at odds with the common good, or if it is as necessary now as it was in 1791.

Without the 2nd only the government, politicians and their security teams would have guns. That is quite clearly the opposite of who we are or should even want to be.

After what happened to the Jews in the 1930’s and 1940’s, and the present day threat to Jews across America, any Jew who favors getting rid of the Second Amendment is an idiot.

Somehow weapons “magically” appear in weapons-free prisons. People who desire weapons will get them; even if the weapons are rocks and sticks. The same applies to drugs and alcohol.

And the right to “bare arms” which can be construed as the right to wear short sleaved shirts. It has no bearing on my God bestowed right to defend myself, family et al. by whatever means possible. the 2amd only pertains to the current government not infringing on it. which it does daily.

The line between good and evil was established in America long ago.

If anyone trades sides now, its only to infiltrate and seed dissent.

No convert should be trusted. Not anymore. If anyone can stand with killing babies and wishing harm to come to good people they can not ever stand with anyone who would protect the innocent and cherish life.

That ship sailed.

I only trust Trump because his conversion is for his kids, and by proxy the future of our power as a global leader. Our final stand must be taken with Trump.

I don’t trust gabbard, Kennedy et al.

“I admire his honesty”

Nonsense. Derch is an unprincipled weasel, who is for Hillary then for Trump depending on where the wind is blowing. It’s sad that any conservative could fall for such an obvious conman.

As an alternative, let's try a pilot project to get rid of all automobiles and trucks to improve public safety! Let's see how that works out; after all they kill and maim thousands of people annually. Heck, terrorists are now using them as WMD! We can all start walking everywhere (exercise is GOOD good, right?) or take public transportation (very safe these days, I'm told ...uh, except Charlotte, NC and a bunch of other cities) ...and there's no messy Constitution to impede us ...just lots of peaceful, clean air and safety!

Once the general public sees the obvious benefits of this marvelous plan I'm sure every politician who supports it will be wildly popular and hailed for their exemplary public service! ...and then the unwashed MAGA masses will finally realize how much better life can be by giving up all our firearms and allowing massive government to protect us and provide us with comprehensive, overwhelming safety!

This debate is on a false premise. The Second Amendment is not to make America more or less “safe”. It makes America America by constraining governments from attacking our God given rights of self defense.

Let’s jump in the time machine and go back to Tribal Africa of the 1700s.

If the peace-loving tribes of Sub-Saharan Africa had guns and “heavy” weapons to ward off the aggressive tribes and invading Arabs intent on taking land and peoples...

How many slaves would have been bound to the West?
Who would have picked our cotton?

Meh... history is a fool in the hands of lefty liberals.
