Right you are. There are many test aircraft that have flown out of there and of course some have made unscheduled landings.
Looking at the picture of the clean-up site, whatever was there was small. Leads one to believe it was RPV sized.
Any story about Area 51 gets me in. Thanks for posting this.

An experimental aircraft crashes in the desert, and all traces of it are cleaned up before the public can observe anything.
