A Russian aerial bombardment that lasted more than 12 hours has killed at least four people and injured at least 70 others in Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the deaths all occurred in the capital, Kyiv, where many of the projectiles were aimed, and the victims included a 12-year-old girl.
The barrage - involving nearly 600 drones and several dozen missiles aimed at seven regions of Ukraine - is one of the heaviest in recent months.
Zelensky warned that Ukraine would retaliate and said the "vile" attack showed Moscow "wants to continue fighting and killing". Russia said it struck military facilities and industrial enterprises supporting Ukraine's armed forces.
For Ukrainians, aerial bombardments can be both random and routine.
They tend to occur late on Saturday evenings - in this case, the first sirens were heard at 22:00 GMT.
The sound of anti-aircraft fire was punctuated with occasional explosions - presumably either from the sound of an intercepted drone or one hitting its target.
In Kyiv, the country's air alert app urged people to head to shelters and stay there. They were followed by pings warning of an increased aerial threat as hundreds of drones descended on the city.
Ukraine's Defence Minister Igor Klymenko said that at least 100 civilian sites had been damaged across the country by the attack, with entire neighbourhoods lefts in ruins.
Emergency services said an attack on Kyiv's Institute of Cardiology had killed a nurse and a patient.
A large bakery, an automobile rubber factory, as well as apartment buildings and civilian infrastructure were also targeted, Zelensky said.
He added that Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv and Odesa regions were also hit.

Sure seems like circa 625 flying munitions didn't kill / injure about 625 people. Misses? Bad targeting? 550 not killing / injuring?
Did someone redefine what war was? Sure would like to know it. Z has been instrumental in extending this thing by refusing to even get close to compromise on any topic with Russia. So he’s just as much a party to the deaths as Russia is.
We live in a world of compromise or we leave it. And the pay back can be ominous sometimes.

People don’t realize Russia is actually trying to limit civilian and unnecessary blood loss.
Russia is seizing land with ethnic Russians and they don’t want to kill any more people, or break any more stuff than necessary. Ukraine is historically one of their biggest trading partners, both nations are Orthodox and Slavic.
Unlike us in Syria or Iraq and many other places where we go in and occupy and are literally hated by 97% of the population (actually the case in Iraq) in Eastern Ukraine, you have people that see the Russians as liberators. Why would you do any more damage than necessary, it doesn’t even sense? Where does this perception come from?
You need to realize that according to the Western MSM there is no such thing as an ethnic Russian in Ukraine (that 20% demographic don’t exist), there aren’t any abuses of these people by the nationalists past or present, everyone loves Mr. Z who is a legitimate leader, everyone supports the war and wants to fight until the last Ukrainian, there aren’t any Nazis among the nationalists either.
Even outside the Eastern ethnic areas Russia is restrained in how they operate. They could just put missiles with 1,000 pound warheads on these targets, or if closer use MLRS to flatten the place, but that’s not what you’re seeing.

Many of the big systems Russia has (ordenance) and delivery systems aren’t being used or see very limited use. Of course no nukes or chem weapons have been used. They could flatten cities conventionally, but “choose” not to.
During 500-600 drone attacks, the Ukrainian defenses are able to interdict about 90%. Russia is now producing about a thousand a day. Guess what’s coming.
