In the spring of 1968 I was a college senior about to graduate. It was a troubled but hopeful moment to be coming into adulthood. The civil rights movement and the peace movement were converging in the nonviolent fight for racial justice and to end the Vietnam War. Martin Luther King Jr. was the most charismatic leader on both fronts, the poetic prose of his speeches soaring with critical idealism, his pacifism increasingly militant as he made the connections between domestic deprivation and foreign intervention. On April 4 King was murdered in Memphis. It was a brutal blow to the morale of young liberals like me

White Christian nationalists?
Anyhow it was ANTIFA and the BLM crowd that rioted, burned and murdered
It should be noted that the only violence committed after the Kirk assassination was done by a deranged liberal educrat who shot up a TV station.
Ah, the scourge of White Christian Nationalists. What with their morals, work ethic, and faith.. it’s just out of control I tell ya! When there not working or going to church, paying taxes, volunteering, or coaching their kids baseball team… oh, they’re plotting. Word has it that they’re planning on voting in November!
The only thing this author rhymes with is stupid.
We’ve always had political poetry. Some better than other.
The Just the Righteous Man
Governor Lewis Morris, 1708/9
The Just the righteous man is brave
Nor to himselfe nor none a Slave
The giddy mob his Soull disdaines
The frownes of tyrants he contemns
Firme to his purpose bravely Stands
Unmovd by their unjust commands
When Angry Auster mows the main
An unmov’d Courage he’ll retaine
And in those Stormes that rouze the Deep
A firme unshaken mind he’ll keep
Nor is’t in natures power to make
His Just his righteous Soull to Shake
Nay Jove himselfe Should he discend
In thunder cannot make him bend
From his Just purpose no let all
Thats made to Instant ruine fall
He’d Sing at natures funerall.
Charlie Kirk was murdered by the OPPOSITION.
The OPPOSITION now tells the future about what will happen, making that the issue rather than the murder.
There is no reasoning, no peace, with the OPPOSITION.
1963-64 YAF/YFG had young enthusiasm. I worked door to door in Chicago’s inner city 26th ward. Other YAF types followed me into the ward. For Goldwater we doubled Ike’s vote; tripled Nixon’s 1960 vote. We we assumed all YAF/YFG was like us. We were shocked to learn the day after the election that YAF/YFG sat on their hands and did not work for Goldwater.
1988 Reaganites thought they had slain the RINO’s. But HW Bush was the candidate and lost. 1992-94 the Moral Majority/Christian Coalition registered 2 million Christians to vote who had never voted before..never voted for Reagan. Their vote won 1994. Sen Leader Trent Lott, with a huge R majority, wouldn’t give these new Republicans the time of day.
How can we be successful in the near future?
History shows again and again how nature points up the folly of Man.
Hey there goes Tokyo
Don’t bother asking Mr.kessler about that.
He has his mind made up.
Cruz, as in Santa Cruz, and stupid each have a long u, so yeah I see your point.
I shudder to imagine how all this will shake out.
But I do have to say, I find it hard to imagine the reconciliation of the two world views that our nation (and the world, it seems) is dealing with.
I have known one person named Kessler in my life and he was a hard-leftist Jew, and I suspect this Kessler is also Jewish. Maybe that is why he invokes the bogeyman of white Christian nationalism (which only non-Christians seem to have heard of).
Guy was too baked to remember what was actually going on I guess.
Non-violent my sainted aunt's grape juice!
.
I happened to listen to “Eve of Destruction” on Spotify this morning.
What a doomer song! With great sincerity and anger the singer expostulates we are on the eve of destruction and lists all the things that doom us.
It sounds like a lot of current posts on x. History rhyming.
